97So, what does a woman know about neckties?
I grew up during the New Wave years, when even women wore neckties, so I asked my dad to teach me how to tie a tie. He stood me in front of him in front of mirror, and tied a tie on me. Then he showed me how to slip it off without untying it, and told me "there you go!" It didn't take much practice and then I could tie my own neckties.
Then I went to college and majored in costume and found out that often I could tie a necktie and the actors that I was helping get dressed could not. I taught a lot of guys how to tie ties in college. When I do the thing where I have the person stand in front of me and I tie it on them, I have to stand on a chair, as I'm really short... LOL...!
Men's neckwear hasn't really changed all that much over the last century. Men's shirts have collars that are now sewn on, instead of buttoning onto a collarless shirt. Ties go through phases of getting a bit longer or shorter, or a tad wider or narrower, but overall, they don't change that much.

Neckties often have a much maligned reputation as a fall-back gift for Father's Day, Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries. Never give a necktie just because you can't think of anything else.
Really think about the man (or woman) you're buying the necktie for. Is this tie to be worn at the office? Is it meant to be a tasteful accessory, an eye-catching accent or a novelty joke tie?
Get a tie with a design or picture on it of something the receiver likes. For example, sports logos, team colors, boating accents, golf images and more all can appear very small and tastefully on a tie.
How stylish is your tie receiver? If the person you're gifting is really into fashion, consider giving them a gift certificate if you're fashion knowledge is not up to their level.

This is really great for both men and women.I remember at time in a class full of motorcycling men, we had the choice of two presentations: 1) show the class how to tie their shoes or 2) show the class how to tie a tie. It was a presentation to access our teaching abilities in front of people we did not know.Since I once lived in England where the uniform included a tie, I decided to teach them how to tie a tie.... not only tie the tie but tie a double windsor knotted one. They all loved it and took their ties home for future use LOL (all tied up of course)Oh, I was the only one who picked that option (tying a tie) and was also the only woman in the class!! Needless to say I passed with tying colours LOL
This is great. I'm going to send this to my son's roommate. He's in a job that requires a suit most days, but doesn't know how to tie his tie so he takes it off by loosening it and taking it off over his head nightly. This is a skill he needs to master.

I learned how to tie a tie when I was about 5 or 6, watching my dad. He was in a Big Band and my job was to polish his shoes. I would stand there with him tying the tie. Cool site, I still know how to tie a tie ONE time, perfect length too. I can't tie a bow tie though so this site is useful!

Great hub!!! Next time I wear a tie, I will come here again to try out all the different knots. Honestly, I did not know there were so many ways to tie them. The video is great. Do you have more videos of the different knot techniques?
BTW, I'm going to go dig out my old skinny leather tie from those aforementioned New Wave days. It should go really well with a red silk blouse I have and make a great holiday dinner outfit.
