"Don't Stop Me Now" (Queen) by Olly Murs (11/14/2009)
"A Fool In Love" originally written for a male vocalist
Seems as if out of nowhere, Olly Murs emerged from obscurity, with some pretty awesome talents and charisma to boot. This is a video of a previous month, which I somehow missed, but when I saw it, I couldn't get over thinking that he was another Chuck Berry, or that I was watching "American Bandstand." That should date me. This song was chosen by Simon Colwell for Olly to perform in the latest UK X Factor, since Simon mentors the over 25 group.
Annie Mae Bullock, later Tina Turner, was just 21 in 1960, when she stepped in to record this song because the scheduled artist was a no show. "A Fool in Love" crossed over to become #2 on the R & B single charts. She first performed this song on national television on American Bandstand, October 3, 1960, when she was 9 months pregnant with Ike Turner's child.
Interestingly Ike Tuner actually wrote the song for Art Lassiter, who, as I said, never showed up. Ike explained in his autobiography, according to Jaime Danehy "The reason she was hollering so loud, straining, on the record, is because the song is not in a woman’s key. It’s in a man’s key, for a man to sing. I was recording the key for Art Lassiter, and that’s why the song is so high." That was the beginning of Annie Mae's career, and here we have come full circle to just the right man to sing it soulfully.
The latest news about Olly is that he's the bookies' favorite to win, even though he broke a finger in the X Factor boxing gym, Friday the 13th, and tonight, 11/14/2009, he performed a Queens' classic, "Don't Stop Me Now" written by Freddie Mercury in Switzerland 1978.
This is a previous post I wrote on Olly.
