What are the odds of having tinnitis or ringing in the ears? The degree of the unwanted sound from one sufferer to another is different. It can be soft and ignorable and can just come and go. But, it could also be constant and loud enough to affect your day-to-day living or prevent you from functioning normally in the society.

Defined as the perception of sound in the ear or ears or in the head where no external source is present, tinnitis affects an estimate of 66 million people in the United States, 12 million of which are severely affected that they are not able to live their normal lives.

When you experience ringing in ears, it can mean that you are suffering from an underlying medical condition. Thus, it is a symptom and not a medical condition in itself. And, this is the primary reason why there is no cure for it. Your doctor will most probably tell you to just learn to deal and live with it.

The conditions that may have caused the unwanted sound that you experience can either be noise-induced cochlear damage, stress, sinus problems or allergic reactions, Meniere's Disease, presbycusis or age-associated hearing loss, head and neck injuries, thyroid disorder, or vitamin B12 deficiency, although there are other known causes. It is then important that you visit your doctor if you experience ear ringing. He or she can run some tests to determine its root cause, which will help you in finding the right treatment.

You should make use of some treatments to prevent ringing in ear to affect you seriously. For instance, it may cause you insomnia because it tends to get louder at night. Thus, if it has been causing you sleep problems, then the use of maskers is a likely option. As you might have known, lack of sleep can lead to further problems like fatigue, inability to perform well the following day, stress, and weakening of the immune system. The condition is usually a cycle, and the results of falling into that cycle can be debilitating.

If you are suffering from tinnitis, do not think that you are alone in it. As mentioned, millions of people suffer from it, and getting stressed and frustrated will just aggravate the condition. Also, you have your family and friends that you can talk to. Make them understand the things that you have to go through because of the unwanted sound so that they can make the necessary adjustments, and they can even help you with the treatments.
