Millions of people have tinnitus. approximaely 20% of the population in industrialized countries (50 million people in the U.S.) experience tinnitus at some point in their lives. Five percent of the same population (12 million people in the U.S.) are distressed enough by their tinnitus to seek medical treatment for it. Although its occurrence is common, it is uncommon for people to know the condition by name. It is even more uncommon for people to understand how it affects those who have it. Tinnitus is a serious condition. It can be very devistating to your life once told that one has introduced their self to Tinnitus. If you have tinnitus here are the first steps to take: Step #1 Take note of the details surrounding the onset of your tinnitus. Were you using a new medication when it first began? were you injured or exposed to excessive noise right before it started? Is the tinnitus in our ear, both ears, or perceived to be somewhere in the head? Does it fluctuate or is it constant in tone? Do you have a hearing loss? Step#2 Visit a medical doctor. There are several physiological causes of tinnitus such as high blood pressure, an underactive thyroid, excessive ear wax, and in rare cases a tumor on the auditory nerve. Control of these medical problems can bring tinnitus relief. Step #3 Have your hearing checked. An audiologist is a hearing specialist with advanced degrees. Also, a Hearing Aid Specialist. Step #4 Talk with your health care provider. Communicate your feelings and concerns to your doctor or audiologist. Those can help you understand you options, and can give you the assurance you need. Step #5 Try something! > Hearing aids, maskers, drug therapy, tinnitus retraining therapy, and other treatments have all been used with success. > Counseling > Cognitive therapy >Biofeeback therapy >Some tinnitus cases appear to be of TMJ origin. A dentist specializing in TMJ can perform an evaluation. Step #6 Take care of yourself. > Use hearing protection. > Learn how you relax best. Exercise, Yoga Meditation, and environmental audiotapes can promote relaxation and reduce fatigue. Step #7 Participate in a social network. Step #8 Join the American tinnitus association. These are some of the things that you can do to help yourself during stressful times.
