Are you tired of taking ‘unnecessary’ visits to the Dentist with a tooth problem? Wondering how you can stop the rot before the extraction and needless filling?

Well I’ve got some good tips that will benefit your oral health from today! Start following them today and you and others will notice a difference.

Tooth brushing

There are a lot of toothbrushes out there but you must make sure the one you use ha the following features:

  1. Make sure the bristles are not too firm-medium to soft bristles are perfect for the job and less likely to cause injury.
  2. Change your toothbrush every 3 months as a guideline- change it more often if the bristles you notice the bristles are worn out and face away from each other!
  3. Electronic toothbrushes are very good for ensuring you brush your teeth for the minimum required time of 2 minutes- anything less and your compromising your oral health and making it more likely to get a toothache!
  4. If you do buy an electric toothbrush, my advice is get a rotating one such as Oral-B, some studies show such toothbrushes are better at removing plaque than any other toothbrush out there!
  5. When you have eaten or had a sugary drink you must wait at least an hour before you attempt to brush your teeth; the enamel will be very soft and brushing your teeth then will obviously remove it and you lose a bit of your tooth.
  6. When you have done your teeth, try not to rinse your mouth, instead just spit out the toothpaste- this allows the fluoride in the toothpaste to have time to penetrate the tooth.

Flossing vs. Interdental toothbrushes

These will do better than your toothbrush in cleaning between your teeth.

  1. Interdental brushes are better than floss as the bristles can reach every surface of a tooth regardless of shape which floss can not achieve.
  2. Make sure you get some advice as interdental brushes come in various sizes according to the size of the gap between your teeth.
  3. Interdental brushes are excellent for sufferers of gingivitis, you might bleed a little the first few times you use them but you’ll benefit in the long run.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash is now almost a necessity to include in your oral health regime.

  1. They work very well for those who suffer from bad breath (halitosis) as they contain an antibacterial.
  2. Most contain fluoride which is necessary especially if you’re looking to stop a cavity from progressing. There is an important exchange of ions that occurs between your teeth and fluoride that result in a much stronger tooth against acid attacks.
  3. Use after tooth brushing and also at certain times during the day as recommended on the dosage.

Tooth stainers

There are two things that will stain your teeth that you should limit if you want to achieve that bright whiter smile.

Beverages- Mainly tea and coffee

Smoking- which can also contribute to oral cancer

Meal Times

It is important not to snack all day especially if you suffer tooth aches a lot. Almost everything you eat is turned into acid by bacteria in your mouth which attacks your tooth enamel/dentine/pulp (depending on which part is exposed)

What you want to do is limit the frequency of attacks.

  1. Stick to eating at meal-times e.g. 3 meals a day
  2. If you have a sweet tooth, try to eat sweets just before or just after meals, that way you limit the acid attacks to your teeth.
  3. Try to drink fizzy drinks only with meals; even if it contains zero sugar, the acid contained in the preservatives is enough to upset your teeth.
  4. Sticky sugars are worst for teeth as they take long to remove; its all about frequency and form of sugar consumed.
