I love fast food. I do what the McDonald's commercials tell me to, and I sometimes dream about Taco Bell (not lying). I've grown up on fast food, and I love the convenience and costs of the stuff. Additionally, I would consider myself health-conscious, being a cross country runner in college. I'm also a vegetarian and have no problems finding things to eat.

You might already have a few ideas on how to eat well at fast food restaurants, but here's what I like to do to achieve that goal:

  • Avoid dressings, cheese, and other toppings - Ask for Italian instead of ranch or other creamy dressings if you can. Do you need condiments to make your food taste good?
  • Look out for fried foods! Do you have to get fried chicken, or can it be grilled? Instead of flautas, try just a soft taco or something. I'm talking about fries too!

  • Remember fruits and vegetables! That's what salads and apple dippers are for! Just don't forget what I said about creamy dressings. And yogurt can be good, but don't forget how much sugar parfaits can have.
  • Be careful what you drink - Soda can have a lot of sugar. Even lemonades can be too sugary. Fountain drinks can be worse for you, so try to go for bottled juice or milk, etc.
  • Think small - Maybe you can find healthier foods... but sometimes you can't. You might have to eat less to make up for unhealthiness. You don't have to eat it all or order more. And for that matter, try not to visit buffets!
  • Go to fast food joints that promote the nutritional information of its offerings - I know when I go to a place and see the nutritional information plainly on the container, or even on the menu, I might be encouraged or discouraged to try it again next time, depending on what the results are. When I go to Mickey D's and am forced to check out how much fat is in my McGriddle because the nutrition facts are stamped on the wrapper, I definitely think about what I'm eating and how that fits into the rest of my diet.
  • Visit fast-food restaurant websites - This way, you can plan what you want to eat when you make it to the restaurant rather than spending too much time reading through nutritional brochures and flyers on your lunch break. You can also easily browse through the menus of different restaurants so you can go to where the food you want is. There are also websites that feature the nutritional information for a number of restaurants all in one place, such as The Fast Food Explorer.
  • Follow regular healthy eating practices - If you don't eat regularly throughout the day, you might find yourself too hungry to make wise choices and simply order what looks good without thinking it through. You might not always get to eat a well-balanced diet at a fast-food restaurant, so try to do so elsewhere.

great hub!! i'm dieting right now [i swear, i don't think i'm ever NOT dieting lol] and saturday night i'll be on the road with friends, so this will help a lot. i already started only eating grilled chicken and getting diet soda and things like that when i go to fast food places, but you have a lot of other things on there like dressings and eat less to make up for the unhealthy food you're eating, etc. just stuff i don't normally think about so it helps out!! :)

Thanks for answering the request and great advice! It's not easy and some people will tend to give you some weird looks, but it is actually possible to eat healthier when grabbing fast food. Also, a great fast food place to eat healthy is Subway, which I go to WAY too much. :)

Ya, it's great you don't get all hung up on food too much. I think it gets to be an obsession and maybe contributes to over eating. People get fat cause they don't eat consistantly and with smaller portions. Our CC coach told us never to eat meat on race day. He was right. The school served hotdogs on Friday, race day and one or two always ended up with cramps, unable to complete the race. CC has changed. The distances are longer. We ran l.8 mile course at home and 1.6 to 1.8 away. I got to run in the state, second for my team and 79 overall. I enjoyed reading your hub. first time I ever talked to anyone who ran CC in college. You must have been some runner.

Thanks for the hub. and keep up the good work

I'm with Ryan because I go to Subway. I try to keep busy and not think about food too much. I have really tried to cut out all fast food but gotta have that Big Mac once in a while.

I'm with Ryan too. I went to Subway today. I got the foot long italian and couldn't finish it. I also skipped the chips and soda. The video was great help on choosing healthy food from a fast food menu.

Thank you all for commenting! I have to say I'm a Subway fan... it's great because I'm vegetarian and their Veggie Delite is one of my favorite things to eat in general! (Good for you, Dottie, for saving part of your sandwich... I end up eating the whole footlong!) And yes, solarcaptain, we definitely had to watch what we ate before races... but then I ate whatever I wanted afterward! Good luck to anyone dieting!

Good info-- I gave up on fast food places years ago. It helped  to move to a very small town with no franchises at all-- ok one Burger King.   About once very two or three months I have to go for a french fry fix-- but it is starting to be even less appealing.  I guess I was unaware that some of these places are actually trying to appeal to healthy eaters.

Great hub. I might try your tips someday. I have a simple plan. Eat what Barbie puts in front of me. She lives and breathes healthy so I see no reason for us both to put all that energy into it. Thanks for your hub. ~ eddie
