Mid-Century Modern Furniture Collection

If collecting mid-century modern furniture is something you're interested in, you can find plenty of great pieces out there to decorate your home or your office. Finding what you are interested in for an affordable price is the key to being successful.

Styles of Mid Century Modern Furniture

Are you looking for a particular style of mid-century modern furniture? If so, being able to readily identify it will help you buy the best items. Are you looking for items that are from a particular designer? If so, then make sure you are getting authentic items. You want to avoid wasting your money on replications. It doesn't matter how good the quality those copies are. They aren't going to increase in value even though they can look good.

Mod Cons - Authentic originals, licensed originals, reproductions and knockoffs—what’s the difference and how can you tell?

Creativity in Your Collection

It can be easy to get yourself stuck in a rut when it comes to decorating. Be creative when it comes to the various types of mid-century modern furniture that you collect. You want to be able to put your own sense of self in every room you design with it. You also want to take the size and shape of the room into consideration.

Be careful not to over do it with midcentury modern furniture, though. Too many pieces in one room can give it a very cluttered appearance. It can also prevent the eyes from being able to focus on it all. If you go with dark wood colors then you want to have light colored walls and curtains. You also want to have good lighting so that you can brighten up the room.

Where to Find Mid-Century Modern Furniture

You can search with antique dealers, go to auctions, and even stumble across awesome deals at estate sales when the owners don't really have a clue what they are selling. When you approach a dealer make sure they are reputable. You don't want to be taken advantage of because you really want a certain piece of mid-century modern furniture on display in their shop.

You also can find a huge selection of mid-century modern furniture on the internet. You need to make sure the cost of shipping the items to you won't be outrageous. Some of the heavy items out there will be expensive to ship. Look for those online shops that offer free shipping when your purchase is over a certain dollar amount.

Or an even better way to shop for rare and used furniture is to find a marketplace that caters to vintage and mid-century modern collectors with only the highest quality items featured. This way you can locate an individual seller in your area, avoiding the shipping costs altogether! Lushpad.com is the premier mid-century modern and vintage furniture marketplace helping both buyers and sellers connect in a safe and reputable online venue.

Collecting mid-century modern furniture is definitely a fun and stylish hobby. Taking the time to learn about the various styles and pieces offered is important. At the same time you need to be able to pick those pieces of mid-century modern furniture that work well together. The entire effect in a room can be easily balanced given the right mixture of pieces.

Hi,

This is a very informative hub, and your suggestions can apply to any type of collection.

I love old things, and one way I've found to get myself a bit educated is by watching the Antiques Road Show, especially when the gentlemen who appraise all styles of furniture are featured. They explain what they are looking for and how you can tell if something you've inherited or purchased is real or fake. Antiques Road Show also does a half hour show called FYI, which covers the whole gamut of collectibles, and what to look for when searching for your treasures.

Thumbs up and thanks for sharing,

Trish

Hi Trish,

Thanks for the comment about the Antique Road Show! It's becoming more and more of a popular hobby. Especially when you find a treasure in your travels.

Hi Jenn,

grrrrrr, I just posted another comment and got the message from HP that they are down for scheduled maintenance, so of course, what I had written went poof!

Anyway, you're welcome. And yes, collecting is a wonderful hobby. The issue I do have with it is, I need to learn restraint. I have way too much stuff at this time, and definitely need to unload a lot of it. I will, however, continue watdhing the road show, as I find it to be very educational.

I am trying to find out about restoring do`s and don`ts for mid century modern furniture. I have aquired a good amount of baker furnitures far east collections dining room furniture from the fiftys, it has a custom sprayed on blonde finish which is showing wear and as far as i can tell it is all solid walnut underneath, will it hurt the value if i refinish it and stain it in an ebony which i believe is one of the factory finishes? I am thinking of selling part of it and intermixing what i keep with a dining room set I am thinking of buying, also could you recommend a website where I can try and identify the other dining room set as it is similar to the baker pieces but i have been unable to find any markings, thank you, Kevin
