Tips for Fixing Bad Credit After Bankruptcy: New Credit

Get new credit. It may be extremely hard for you to get a credit card that has a decent limit or interest rate, but there are other solutions. One of the best ways you can get new credit is through department and retail store cards. Another option are gas cards. Of course, it's important to keep in mind, even if you have these cards, you shouldn't spend on them like crazy or max them out -- you should be using these cards in order to improve your credit, not as a plastic replacement for actual money.

You can also get secured credit cards which will rely on you supplying the creditor with some sort of collateral, i.e. something valuable that the creditor can seize in case you default on your debts.

You should be careful when applying for credit cards when fixing your credit after bankruptcy, however, because some credit card companies will essentially try to screw you over. They will give you a card with exorbitantly high interest rates and fees, making it almost impossible for you to keep up with the payments. Also don't bother with buying pre-paid credit cards, because this won't do anything for your credit score.

While it's a good idea to apply for new credit, you don't want to be applying for too many new cards. This can actually hurt your score and will actually work against you.

Change your habits. For a lot of people, part of what led them to bankruptcy was spending money on things they could not afford. It's important that you only spend money on what you know you're going to be able to pay for when the bill comes. If you charge anything to your credit card, make sure you pay off the full balance when payment time comes around.

One of the most important tips for fixing credit after bankruptcy is to know how to allocate your money. You should know exactly how much money you're going to bring in every month, and you need to know how much of that money needs to go towards paying bills and other necessities. Make a plan and know exactly where your money is going every single month. Don't take on more responsibilities than what you can afford.

If you feel like you can't handle your financial responsibilities, either due to a low income or a lack of understanding of finances, contact a free, accredit credit counseling agency or apply for free financial planning. These people will work with you to help you gain hold of your credit problems and put you on the path towards fixing your credit after bankruptcy.
