WORRYWART

Everybody worries at one time or another. Things like money, jobs, relationships, and health can cause worry about one or more even on a daily basis. Often the worry has no basis. But when it becomes excessive, it is termed a General Anxiety Disorder. If you are constantly consumed with worry from the time you rise until you retire at night, you probably need medical help.

PHOBIAS

There are a wide range of phobias Among them are fear of small spaces, spiders, crowds, public speaking, and other things. These should be dealt with medically when they become severe enough to begin ruining one's life. These are usually irrational and can be treated where necessary. Phobias, however, as they worsen can lead to panic attacks. Talk to your doctor.

OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER

As the name states a part of this disorder is being obsessive about something which is usually a fear or desire, and that drives one into compulsive actions. The compulsion is usually repetitive such as constantly cleaning the house. When severe, the person may not be able to go to work, attend school, live alone, drive a car, or be out in public. It is time to see your doctor when it become severe.

AGORAPHOBIA

Agoraphobia is the fear of leaving home or a safe area to go out into the world. They may refuse to leave home, or a room in their house. It could be found in combination with other phobias. It is more common among women than men. These are persons that often need to be in control of situations. When present beyond mild conditions medical help is needed.

PANIC ATTACKS

Anxieties can lead to panic attacks. Mild panic attacks are quite common, but if caused by common events, they should be treated.

The first step may be to control your breathing, start breathing again in other words. That can cause you calm down some.

The second step is to see your doctor.

When you know what causes the panic attacks you can avoid them, or minimize the causes. And the causes may be reasons to see a doctor.

When panic attacks are substantial or severe carry a list of emergency contacts, including your doctor, and you may want to carry a bag with you that contains items that calm you, such as your favorite teddy bear, or religious items, puzzle books, mints, money, or anything that helps you to calm down and relax.

DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY

Anxiety disorders can lead to depression. Millions of Americans do suffer from depression at times, but usually it is mild and is overcome with out medical help. Some indicators that depression may be a problem are: a loss of appetite, or an increase in appetite, no sexual energy, muscle aches and pains, unable to concentrate, feeling afraid or confused, easily angered, not caring about things you used to love, feeling sad and cannot pinpoint the reason, hating yourself, and thinking about death. If you have thoughts about killing yourself, suicide, you need medical attention immediately. Don't hesitate to call 911 or your doctor. You are important to the community and to your family which should deny any thoughts of killing yourself, but seek help from your doctor or emergency room if you have such thoughts. There is medical treatment available, so seek it.

TREATMENTS

There are alternative treatments for anxieties, such as vitamins, minerals and herbs. But if any anxiety is more than mild ask your doctor about alternative treatments. He may agree with them, and guide you to the ones best for you.

The first step for any anxiety beyond mild is correct diagnosis, and your doctor can do that for you.

There is talk therapy such as psychotherapy, and a part of that can be cognitive behavior therapy, psychodynamic therapy which your doctor may use to find the causes and then provide better treatment. There are also medical treatments (medications), which you should make sure does not cause any conflicting, or defeating, side effects. You don't need something adverse added to, or adding problems, to your anxiety problem. Choose the one that best suits you, and that works best for you.

CONCLUSIONS

Anxiety disorders are treatable, and controllable, if not curable, including those that might lead to suicide. You don't need to suffer without help. And the best place to start is with your doctor.
