Here are some valuable tips for newbies who are into trekking and mountaineering. These tips provide information on many aspects of trekking like essential things to be taken and some steps to be taken before setting out for your trip.
- Carry raincoat or windsheeter with you.
- Carry plastic bags in larger numbers.
- Always carry a hunting or small army knife.
- Fire should not be lighted unnecessarily.
- For preventing insect bites, wear full pants and shirts.
- Always try to leave some permanent mark on those places where one is likely to get lost.
- Trekking Rope (about 50 meters long).
- If you are going into the mountains, use a topographical map and a compass.
- Carry right food, rich in carbohydrates.
- Study weather forecast carefully. Check the approximate temperatures you are going to face while on your trip and make sure your sleeping bag's rating is better than that.
- Try to communicate to the locals and read information in guidebooks.
- Keep a first-aid box with you.
- If going into snowy terrain, always carry ice ax with you and never give your ice ax to anybody during trip as it is very important for you.
- If going to explore an unknown area, inform local tourism department about your trip before leaving.
- Always carry matches in water-resistant zip lock bags.
- Always check your shoes before going on the trip.
- Most importantly, leave no trace, except your footprints in nature. Pack up all the garbage that accumulates and help save the environment/
Besides these tips, use a cotton inner inside your sleeping bag. This is actually good for the sleeping bag as well as the skin also. Put on clothes in layers. It will provide a thermos system inside and keep you warm in the mountain.
Always cover the backside of the neck, especially in too cold or too hot. It is very sensitive portion of the body, which is generally left uncovered.

Great tips!! I lived in the Rockies for years and ran mtn passes. It can be easy to leave with perfect weather and end up with a rain that is extremely cold. After some hard lessons I learned how to pack what I needed.
