Overweight children generally receive a lot more abuse than adults. Teasing and bullying are much more common at school than at work. Low self esteem is an obvious side effect of not being able to join in many of the physical activities with the other children. Also the adolescent years are generally reflected later on into their adult life, so it is imperative that corrective measures be taken with overweight children at an early age.

Along with the obvious physical and mental discrimination these overweight children are subjected to, there is also the issue of their health. This can generally be improved by incorporating more fruit and vegetables into their diet as well as more exercise. The dieting pattern would closely parallel that of an adult but with more suprvision, Children follow their parents example, so the parents would have to have to demonstrate healthy eating and exercise habits first.

Meals should be a family event and eaten at the dinner table rather than while watching TV. Overweight children should be presented with well balanced healthy meals as well as paying close attention to portion control. Junk food should not be kept in the house, but replaced with healthy snacks such as fruit and raw vegetables instead. Soda should be replaced with water; this not only has no calories but is also needed by the metabolism to lose weight.

Healthy lunches should be prepared at home with lean meat and also some raw vegetables and fruit to discourage them from buying junk food. Again give them bottled water or juice rather than pop. Also encourage them to join in some physical activities if possible.

There are also camps that are specifically designed to work with overweight children. Here they can interact with other children their own age who have the same problem. The Counselors also teach them healthy eating habits and have non competitive exercise programs where they can progress at their own pace without hurting themselves. These are great for improving their fitness levels as they lose weight and boost their self esteem at the same time. It is common for overweight children to lose 20-30 pounds during the program.

When they have reached a certain level, they can even consider a mature type of weight loss program such as: http://losebodyweightnow.blogspot.com/
