When my son transitioned to the "big boy bed" I went and bought a plain white sheet for it and some fabric paint in several colors. I let him decorate his new sheet with hand and foot prints - we also did a curtain to match.

He was so excited about using what he'd just made he was anxious to get into bed right away that night. He never looked back. We did the same thing sort of as a tradition when he moved to the twin sized bed.
