If you want to sleep well at night on a camping trip you first need to make sure that your kids sleep well. As an adult, you are responsible for your kids warmth and comfort when they sleep.

The sleeping bag requirements for kids are a little bit different to adults and the design is much more simple.

Cheaper materials are usually used in the construction of kids sleeping bags. The use of down insulation is rather uncommon. If peeople buy high quality sleeping bags for kids it won't be the one that would be outgrown in just a few short years.

Synthetics are preferred to down by manufacturers for another reason. Less care is needed when using synthetic sleeping bags and when wet they're easy to dry. It's a much better material especially if your kids still wear nappies. Down sleeping bags for kids are costly and it's part of the reason why they don't get many buyers.

For backpacking, weight is an important consideration. However, since kids sleeping bags are small, the difference may not be very big.

It's inevitable that lower quality kids sleeping bags are more popular. Down may be overkill anyway since kids sleep warmer than adults. Kids sleep warmer than adults even when they have smaller bodies because they have a higher metabolic rate.

Hood, draft tubes and draft collars are common in kids sleeping bags even when they're cheap. In cold weather, the hood is a must have because heat is lost through the head the fastest.

A draft tube enhances the effectiveness of a kids sleeping bag by preventing heat from escaping through the zipper coils. Additional, some bags have insulated tubes positioned just above the shoulders to prevent heat from radiating out of the sleeping bag.

Deuter, Integral Designs, Big Agnes, Lafuma, Slumberjack and Tough Traveller all make sleeping bags that cater for kids.

There's a huge range of kids sleeping bags that can be found in the market from cheap baby-fat types to ones that have everything including shaped hoods, pad loops, draft tubes and more. In general, kids sleeping bags are cheap but it cost as much or more than the adult version depending on the level of sophistication.

We agree with your comment that Cheaper materials are usually used in the construction of kids sleeping bags. We've found that the main reason for this is that kids sleeping bags are made for indoor use rather than real camping trips.
