Tips on how to get a breastfed baby to sleep through the night.
68Breast Is Best!
Breastfeeding is not only the best way to feed your baby, but is also free and easily accessible!
A lot of people and information products avidly promote breastfeeding but sometimes it is not all as plain sailing as they like to make out
Problems That Can Happen
There can be a number of problems arising from breastfeeding your baby, some easy to deal with and some not so easy.
Problems can range from not being able to get your baby to latch on, to your baby feeding constantly. Other such issues can be sore nipples, not enough milk to satisfy baby, mum not wanting to get her boobs out in front of people and the frequency of feeding.
A breast fed baby will feed more often than a formula fed baby as breast milk is digested quite quickly unlike formula which is a lot 'heavier'.
Getting some rest
A simple problem, such as not getting enough sleep can quite easily become a major trauma to some people, especially a new mum with a demanding baby.
Some babies will sleep through the night from quite a young age - just a few months, whilst some can take years. All is not lost though.
One of the first ways to adopt when trying to establish a good nights sleep is to get into a good bedtime routine.
Starting from about dinner time, have a play with baby, read a book, have a bath. Do something to engage baby in which could possibly get rid of extra energy.
Once baby starts yawning or getting bored of the activity now is the time to start winding down. Get baby changed and ready for bed and give a last feed.
Many 'experts' say you shouldn't feed until they are asleep, and that you should put them down awake so as they get used to going off to sleep on their own, but do what works for now and concentrate on getting your little one to sleep at night.
So, baby is asleep, your bedtime is probably just a few hours away.
Enjoy that spare time and when it is your time to turn in give your baby one more feed. It doesn't matter if your baby is still asleep, just offer a feed, but don't change the nappy or make a fuss and wake baby. Simply put baby on the breast and let the baby feed, then put back to bed again. Some people call this a 'dream feed' and it can work really well.
If baby is starting to stir but you are not yet going to bed then give a 'dream feed' before they wake up completely.
Works?
If this simple method works, then great just carry on and hopefully you can make the evenings a bit longer.
If it doesn't work then there are plenty of other suggestions - have a look on some of the baby/parent forums as there are many people around with the same issues.

a baby will only sleep when they want to! make sure they hand him over with plenty of milk and nappies - make sure he's fed and dry.
you can play it 2 ways - be silly and wacky and make him laugh till he conks out! - put some music on and have a boogie, play with wooden spoons and pots and pans.
Or do some wind down things, like play quietly, look at some books or toys - mags, mobile phone, ds lite, even put on some kids tv that you can watch - disney film etc.
to get him to stay asleep through the evening or night then make sure he goes to sleep not too long after a bottle and just keep things fairly quiet - no noisy music, video games, friends etc
if all else fails phone your sister and tell you can't handle it any more!!!
hope it helps a bit :)
Thanks I've already put him to bed! But only after an hour or so! He's adorable and cute like all babies are but OMG, I almost ran out of ideass! You know what finally did the trick? I sang to him Hollaback Girl (at least the beat and tune) while I marched! he did quiet down but initially, he refused to lay on my chest. Everytime I put him to rest against me, he'd wake up and bawl! As if he's fighting his drowsiness or something! So I figured I'd let him sleep bowed down - just like he wanted. And true enough he fell asleep positioned like that. I waited for like 15 minutes or so, so I could be sure he's deep into it. What an experience! It's like getting a workout in the middle of the night. He's finally asleep and hopefully off to tralala! He's so cute I'd do it again despite! Anyways, I'd print these tips here just in case my sister decides I make a good nanny! Thanks for bothering, it's very much appreciated! Now I see mothers through different sets of eyes! I salute you! :D
Btw, I apologize if I assumed wrongly, ie that you are a mother.
no,no i am a mum and also a neonatal nurse (special care babies) so i've looked after quite a few babies over 10 years. well done in getting him to sleep tho!
ok, no harm done then! Thanks again :D btw, i have a fan mail for you!
cheers!
Definately, breast milk are good for babies as it contains all the nutrients which are necessary for the babies. But to take into consideration, some mum, like my sis are unable to breastfeed her baby, so I wonder if people are able to share information on the alternatives available out there...
PS: I felt unlucky as out of the 14 siblings, I'm the only one [No. 13] unable to be breastfeed by my mom as I'm born prematurely [C-Section], 2 months early [I guess I can't wait to see the world out there. hihi]
I've got a little girl on the way! And, even though I'm not gonna be breast feeding (well, you know...) I think her momma will enjoy the tips!
I heard whiskey works too!
... only via the boob though!
Great hub. Very informational.
Thanks for the hub. I sent it to my daughter who is having a bit of a time withher newborn latching on and her getting some rest. She pumps and feeds the milk in the bottle, but he seems to like sleeping on one of them instead of in his bed. She hopes the baby figures it out. I have picture of him on a hub if you so desire to see him and his family. He's my first grandson!!
very informative
