Tips to start off your first hub

The first and foremost thing that you want to do when starting out on HubPages as with any site is to figure out what kind of content that you want to supply. If you know a lot about cooking, then that might be the one direction that you head. If you know a lot about fishing, then that might be the angle. It all goes down to what you know about.

In cases like mine, where there is a little that you know about a lot, then looking for REQUEST to answer would be the key of where to go. In cases like this it is easier to build a following because the people that place the request generally read what you write. Also other people like myself that answer a lot of the request will also go in and at least read your answers.

When you figure out the direction of which way to go, the next steps is putting one of these together. I can remember when I started out I left so much out of my HUBS that it hurt me more than it helped. It is so important to add pictures, videos if you have them about what you are writing, relevant links, and ad capsules. More things like this will push your ratings up which will in turn bring more readers to you.

The thing that you want to know is someone does not want to come out to read 1 or 2 paragraphs that is composed of 50 words or less. You want to make sure that you get as detailed as possible, supplying your "customers" with the meat and potatoes of your HUB. This will satisfy their appetite and when they want to get "fed", they will come back looking for you.

Hi Danniboi,

I agree to what you have written, almost.

My main method is to write about what I know. I belive everyone has something to offer. Everyone knows something. You might know more about how to put your baby to sleep, how to do house accounting, how to wash that stain off your treasured blouse...

There are many readers who would love this information. Also like you said it is best to group related hubs together. This helps to get more traffic. They love one hub. they will want to check out your other hubs.

Your tip on writing more than 50 words is very important. More words the better. Else it looks like spam.

Also, break huge chunks of text into seperate text blocks.

I usually try to write 600 words usually seperated into about 4 text blocks, with photos and videos too. I use the requests frequently...sometimes they help my brain remember some of the information I actually have a good grasp on! My highest traffic hub came from answering a request (scary movie list), and two othersĀ of my other high traffic hubs have also come from looking through the requests. AND both were topics that I'd never have quickly thought of, but they were all topics that I actually did know a lot about! Then I've written hubs I thought would be popular and that I felt comfortable, competent...and nobody looks at them!

desert blondie, I can relate to what you are saying. If I write a regular hub, it seems like no one reads them. But let me write a request and I get all kinds of hits from it.
