Tips on Finding a Personal Trainer
53When looking for a personal trainer, you must take a couple of things into account: education, certification, & experience. Unfortunately, almost anyone can go online, pay some money, and walk away with a "certification." So here are some tips on what to look for:
1) Try to find a trainer who has an education in the field. There are a number of bachelor's degrees that emphasize health, nutrition, exercise, anatomy, physiology, & proper training techniques. These degrees include: Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Physical Education, etc.
2) Ask what certification your trainer holds. There are very specific certifications that are viewed in the field as being reputable. Any certification given by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) are exceptional certifications. Other certifying bodies that are viewed favorably are NASM, and ACE.
3) Experience is always another factor to consider when choosing a trainer; however, experience isn't EVERYTHING. Just ask your trainer if they have any other clients that you can call for a reference. A good trainer will be able to provide you with several.
