To "Bang" or Not to "Bang" - That is the question.
74Are bangs In or Out?
Determining whether bangs would compliment your face or not is a question that most women consider when choosing a hair style. Whether it be side long bangs, bangs cut straight across the top of your eyebrows, choppy, blunt, or tapered, there might be a style for you.
Bangs have already made their debut on the runways. Full-layered bangs cut just below the eyebrow without too many wisps are how they’re wearing it. This style is easy to maintain by letting them fall when your hair is down or hiding them by pulling them back in an up-do. These are the easiest to grow out when you’re ready for change.
The term bangs is referring to a fringe of hair falling over the forehead (especially if cut square). According to etymology scholar Robert Barnhart, the term is strictly American in origin (the British call it fringe) first surfacing in 1878.
A common explanation, and the most likely one, is that bang(s) is short for bangtail. A bangtail is a horse's tail trimmed horizontally, so that the tail has a flat, even end, and hence a horse having such a tail.
The Decision: Do you Bang or Not?
It really does rely on the shape of your face and the type (texture) of hair you have. Straight or wavy hair works well with bangs. My two girls have curly hair and bangs do not work well with the texture of their hair. With all the flat irons out on the market today, they love to try the bangs from time to time but it's really time consuming and it tends to dry out the hair if used too much.
The Factors:
1. Texture of your hair:
· Curly hair - Bangs do not normally work when the hair is too curly. It’s actually a nightmare (from experience!)
· Wavy hair - If you have smooth waves, then you can have tapered longer bangs. These bangs normally end somewhere mid ear.
· Straight hair – Bangs are perfect for naturally straight hair or hair with some bend.
2. Shape of your FaceThisshould be analyzed to select the very best type of bang to flatter the face:
· Heart Shape - depending on the ultimate goal, bangs can be selected to either minimize the general wideness of the heart shaped face or help to balance the prominent chin. A side swept feathered or texturized bang style can also be another great option.
A heart shaped face can also usually carry off full bangs cut straight across the face (like the bangtail). Long or short, full bangs can look really great for a heart shape.
Celebs who have a heart face shape: Katie Holmes, Jennifer Lopez, Rachel Bilson, Reese Witherspoon, Ziyi Zhang
· Long Face - What works for your long face type? Several looks work for you. Bangs make your face appear shorter because they cover up a particularly larger forehead. You can wear anything from blunt bangs to long, side-swept bangs.
Celebs who have a long face shape: Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashlee Simpson, Liv Tyler, Giselle Bundchen
· Oval Face - The oval face shape is considered to be a face shape that can wear any type of style or hair. This includes bangs which can be worn in just about any style. Of course bangs for oval face shapes should be chosen with consideration of the texture of your hair.
Celebs who have an oval face shape: Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Jada Pinkett Smith
· Round Face - Uneven choppy bangs are the best bangs for you! Round faced people should always look for slenderizing tricks. The asymmetrical style will give the illusion of an elongated slightly oval face. This way you'll be able to mask the roundness of your features and the wideness of the forehead.
Celebs who have a round face shape: Fergie, Kate Bosworth, Oprah Winfrey, Cameron Diaz, Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, Catherine Zeta-Jones
· Square Face - If you have a square face, you'll want to play down your strong, angular jaw. Texture, in the form of curls or choppy ends, does this brilliantly. You can also get away with short, spiky cuts and long, sleek styles with layers that start at the jaw line and continue downward.
Celebs who have a square face shape: Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, Angelina Jolie, Isabella Rosellini and Rosario Dawson
You will more than likely need to visit the salon between haircuts to revamp the bangs but it’ll all be worth it. All change is good and bangs can be really low maintenance, if chosen correctly. You can leave them to dry on their own, since they have a little weight they will fall more natural as they dry.
When you get tired of them you will be able to grow them out any way you’d like. If you started with a longer style you could layer them and they would already have a little length to them. It's a win-win situation!
