Writing Nonfiction Can Be Fulfilling...

A day spent dreaming, is a day that is well kept.
A day spent dreaming, is a day that is well kept.

What is Non - Fiction?

Non Fiction can be:

  • Essays
  • Articles
  • Thesis
  • Term Papers / Research Essays
  • Scholarly Journal Articles
  • Dissertations
  • News Papers
  • Reports.
  • Technical Writing.
  • Business Writing.
  • Resume and Cover Letter Writing (well) some can be deemed fiction, depending on who is writing the resume.
  • Advertisement Writing.
  • Website (content) writing.

Creative Nonfiction can be:

  • Memoir
  • Autobiography
  • Biography

The idea of creative nonfiction can be listed under any form of nonfiction writing that uses, "creative language, images, or other types of story telling techniques, commonly found in a short story. A newspaper article could be classified as the work of creative nonfiction, if the writing meritts the elements listed above.

There are rules to writing, (such as newspaper articles). The use of clear, and direct language is preferred. Reservation is given for the use of elaboration and other elements of short story type of writing. When an individual picks up the newspaper, they want to be informed about what is happening in their community, or abroad. If all articles used too many elements of "story telling," the most important topics may be mis-read, or not taken seriously.

Creative Nonfiction Short Stories Are:

  • Thought provocative
  • Interesting
  • Enchanting
  • Vivid
  • Mysterious
  • Entertaining
  • True Life
  • Real Events
  • Factual, yet, creative.

A piece of creative nonfiction can also be like taking a:

  • A journey to another person's experiences.
  • A ride with the reader, through the mountains, OR:
  • On a boat, catching the first Martin, or first blue gill, to ski for the very first time, or climb a ladder (while) having a great fear of heights!

Creative nonfiction is a new, yet, not so new genre of writing. Who first used the term: Creative Non-Fiction? When was the first piece of Creative nonfiction published? Your guess is as good as mine! Labels changes, and so do the style in which authors write.

  • We have a unique voice.
  • We all live separate lives.

Our experiences and traits, set us and our stories apart, just as our writing voice shines on the page.

Non Fiction is not:

  • Made up
  • Imagined
  • Fiction
  • Sci-fi (science fiction)
  • Boring
  • Dull
  • Dry
  • Pointless
  • Emotionless

Introduction to Memoir Writing

                                                        Autobiography Writing

         What is an autobiography?

                                 Auto + Bio + Graphy

                                  Auto = Automatic
                                             Bio = Life
                                                      Graph = Map

When you think of an autobiography what is the first
word that comes to mind?

· First Person POV
· True
· History
· Boring
· Easy
· Complicated
· Interesting

* Exciting
* Heart wrenching
* Adventurous
* Informative
* Interesting
* First, Second or Third Person (POV)
* Descriptive
* Poetic
* Memorable
* Fascinating
* Breathtaking
* WOW

Tips for creating an interesting autobiography:

1. Start the story as you would a fiction story
in scene!

2. Begin the story with an image

3. End each chapter (or the end of the story with another
image)

4. Create a reason (for this opening/ending) image
Symbolism

5. Use dialogue

6. Incorporate vivid descriptions

7. Use strong characters (from your life experiences) who would
make the story stand out.

8. Include scenery, sights, sounds, images, taste, and smells.

9. Allow the reader to "feel" what you feel with "showing" the
scene.

10. Add a dash of figurative language such as symbolism,
metaphor, puns, smiles, and allusions. Create a new form of
autobiography--make it unique, different, your own style!

11. Most importantly, "go to the painful place." This may or
may not be the type of story you wish to reveal to the public,
however, some of the most popular autobiographies are the
ones that have to do with a major life change, something that "happened"
to the person who wrote the story.

It does not have to be a negative theme, there are a lot of
autobiographers who have written about topics such as: making
a life change such as taking on a new career, or their experiences
with teaching, writing, becoming a race car driver, or cycling
with the use of a prosthetic limb.

Since the assignment other characters, places you have traveled
to, people who went with you, symbolism, metaphors, (figurative
language), action, adventure, or even mystery.

LOST

The night was cold and I feared that I would never again find my place,
or my children. Where were they? I asked God silently and often out loud
in front of strangers. I didn’t care about what people thought of me during
this time. I don’t think I thought about a lot of things.

I was an addict.
I was homeless.
I was afraid to continue living.

God, please help me, I said.

The door opened and I remained crouched down on the garage floor.
Waiting. Waiting for a hand to reach out but, nothing came.
No one was going to rescue me.

I was lost.
Without my family, without my three boys, and without much memory of
the past. The only images that I knew were real, were of my three children.
I knew I was a mother and I knew that I lost them.

I lost them.
