To Pee Or Not To Pee

I have three daughters, my first was born overall healthy, no real issues to note.  My second daughter was born with bilatteral renal reflux.  With this condition, her ureters did not enter her bladder as normal people's should.  It was explained to me that the ureters should enter the bladder at a slight angle.  This allows the muscles of the bladder to create a sophisticated valve that keeps the urine that travels though the ureters in the bladder.  If this didn't happen, we would have the reflux and that would cause infections in the bladder and kidneys... not a healthy thing.

After several years and several surgeries to correct the problem, she finally straighted out and had good reports from the urologist.  My third daughter had the same condition at birth, not nearly as severe and I have been able to control the infections without medications and surgeries.  I have made myself more aware of the better ways to promote good urinary health.

My oldest daughter, who like me, has OCD and doesn't like using the rest rooms at school, came home and said, "i really need to pee, I haven't gone all day."  I was a little shocked, at first i didn't believe her.  Then I remembered when I was younger doing the same thing, being uncomfortable with a bladder like a water balloon in the hands of a four year old.  It was very possible she was telling me the truth.  I told her she shouldn't do that, she should go to the restroom frequently to relieve herself... it isn't healthy to hold it.

I waited for her to ask me why it wasn't healthy, but she didn't... I took this as a good opportunity to come up with something, so when she sat and thought about what I said and figured I was just telling her a bunch of baloney, I would have an intelligent answer.  I checked it out online.  This is what I found

Holding your urine can cause

infections in the bladder and kidneys

bleeding in the bladder and kidneys

     scarring in the kidneys

     hernias

It is good to urinate every couple hours to rid your body of dangerous toxins.  You should drink plenty of fluids.  Water is the best, It doesn't contaminate your system like sodas and other sugary drinks that can cause kidney stones and other problems in your urinary tract.

Happy Peeing :)

My daughter just recently became potty trained and it seems she will never have a problem going pee anywhere. When I take her into restrooms at restaurants etc, she acts like there is a party going on in there. She is pointing at people saying "He's Peeing, So is He, and I am gonna pee too!"
