To be successful

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), AKA The Big Kahuna, of a corporation is appointed by a board of directors; investors who are interested in making money. The CEOs job is to make the business profitable, by creating a strategic vision and leading others in order to achieve that vision. When the business succeeds, so does the CEO, reaping huge monetary and prestigious awards. CEO's are brought in to lead companies because of their experience and reputation in the industry. They are as diverse as the companies they lead, and yet they are universally recognized as leaders with power, conviction and experience.
To be successful, act as though you are CEO of your life, and adopt the following traits:
Visionary - CEOs have a clear vision of the future. They share their vision enthusiastically and motivate others to follow. They create strategic plans to map the way, giving direction so no one gets lost or left behind on the journey.
- Do you have clear vision of your future?
You have to know what your want before you can work to achieve it. This isn't a step to be taken lightly. You may think you want to achieve a certain goal, with little thought to the reasons you want to achieve it.
For example, "I want a million dollars" is a goal for my future I can visualize as a million dollar check with my name on it. But this doesn't touch on WHY I want a million dollars. By asking why, I learn my true desires:
To work from home
To be financially secure for life
To provide a lifestyle of comfort and security for myself and my family
To enjoy vacations, experience new cultures, have adventures and live fully.
Now when I envision my future, I don't just see a check with a lot of zeros on the end.
- Do you have a plan to achieve your goals?
My vision for the future is to work from home, have financial security, a comfortable lifestyle which includes freedom to take vacations and have adventures. With this clear vision, I can create a plan, aside from winning the Lotto, to achieve my ultimate vision:
Change my career so I can work at home, with flexible hours and steady income - write articles, market myself, establish a presence on line, sell books, write books...
Reduce my expenses so I can live on less and save - pay off debt, downsize our house, buy a used car, invest extra income...
Self Reliant - CEOs take the initiative to find a better way. They don't wait for something to "break" before they take action or hope someone else will deal with it first. Self Reliance doesn't mean doing everything themselves; CEOs delegate and rely on the opinion of people who are knowledgeable in certain areas.
- Are you accountable for the quality of your life?
Everything in your life is a direct result of the actions you have taken, or the actions you have failed to take. Once you take ownership for EVERYTHING, positive or negative, you can change it. Don't wait for anyone else to act before you are able to take action in your own life. Whether it's an apology from a parent, approval from a spouse or rejection from a boss, you don't need it to move forward. As long as you are waiting for someone, something or someday, you are a victim to the whims of circumstance.
- Are you taking action every day to create change?
- Are you willing to seek help and model success?
It's ok to need help. Being self reliant doesn't mean you're alone to fend for yourself. It simply means you don't rely on others to get results. Be willing to ask for help and learn from others, but don't give up if you don't immediately find what you seek. Continue to look for resources and model the success of others. As Anthony Robbins says "Success leaves clues." You can drastically shorten your learning cycle by following the bread crumbs marking the path to success.
Optimistic - CEOs believe they can lead a company to a successful future. Their intentions and visions are positive. Their belief in the "rightness" of their actions allows them to make tough decisions when necessary. Each day is a joyful step toward the realization of their dream.
- Do you believe you can achieve your vision?
Henry Ford once said "Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right." You must absolutely believe you can and will achieve your goals. It doesn't matter if it seems outrageous (in fact, it should be outrageous) as long as it's possible with consistent effort and progress.
- Are you excited?
You have to feel anticipation like a kid on Christmas Eve, just waiting for Santa to deliver that shiny new bike so you can get out and ride it. Your vision should be what you want more than anything else, not what you think you should want, not what you think you deserve.
- Are you grateful?
No matter where you are in your life right now, by grateful for what you have. You can't achieve your dream if you're resentful of your reality. You have to embrace your experiences, because they delivered you to this moment in time of possibility. Your future is pure possibility and you are on standing on the threshold of creation. Today will be what you create.
Committed - CEOs are devoted to the achievement of their goals. They don't suffer a set back and give up on their dreams. CEOs monitor their progress and adjust their action to achieve their goals.
- Are you willing to fail in order to succeed?
You will have set backs and disappointments as you set out to achieve your vision. The only guaranteed way to avoid failure is to not try. Of course this is also the only guaranteed way to avoid success too.
- Are you committed to your ultimate goal rather than your plan?
My plan is to be a writer. My goal is to have the freedom to work from home with financial security. If I fixate on writing as the only way I will ever achieve my vision, I may miss other opportunities. If I fail to earn an income from my writing, I can't give up on my desire to work from home. The key is that I don't become too attached to the "plan" (a means) that I lose sight of my ultimate goal (an end).
- Are you willing to be flexible?
Speed - CEOs act with conviction. They have a vision, a plan, a belief in their ability to achieve their goals and a commitment. They are ready for action, YESTERDAY and they demand results. Even if the results don't meet their original expectation, because taking some action and getting mediocre results is better than taking no action and getting no results. With results, plans can be adjusted, better actions taken and better results obtained. CEO's don't "hope" for the outcome they envision, they act on it.
- Are you ready to take action, RIGHT NOW?
Avoid procrastination by breaking down large projects into manageable steps and prioritizing. As you begin to see results, you will be more likely to follow through on future tasks.
- Are you willing to improve your thoughts and actions to improve your results?
No one is more qualified for the position of CEO in your life than you. You are in charge, you make the plans and you reap the rewards.
