To legalize or not to legalize.....that's the question!
70Prostitution dates back to 2400 B.C. In ancient times, prostitution often had religious connotations. Sexual intercourse with temple maidens was often an act of worship to the temple deity. In Greece, prostitutes were often women of high social status, however in Rome these women were considered to be on a low social level who were forced to wear wigs and special garments to signfy their trade. Prostitution flourished in the Middle Ages, and licensed brothels were considered to be a source of revenue to the municipalities.
Laws surrounding prostitution vary all over the world. There are only two states in the U.S. where the buying and selling of sexual services is legal. In Rhode Island, the actual act of prostitution which is defined as the engaging of sexual services for the exchange of money is legal because there is no specific law on the books that defines it or makes it illegal. However certain acts often associated with prostitution are considered illegal such as: street prostitution, pimping, and operation of a brothel. In Nevada, 8 out of 16 rural counties operate brothels. Prostitution is heavily regulated in this state
In the modern era there is a continued debate over whether or not to legalize prostitution. Abolitionists and regulationists continue to argue which solutions are better for government, society, and the women in the business.
Abolitionists, mainly made up of social and religious conservatives continue to maintain that prostitution continues to undermind the social institution of marriage and heightens exploitation of women.
Regulationist argue that legalization of prostitution could promote safer conditions for those who participate. They also argue that taxation could be benificial to the government.
Sticter regulations would decrease crime and the spread of disease.
For centuries the causes and consequences for prostitution have rested on Women. In 1997, the famous Heidi Fleiss also known as the "Hollywodd Madam" was convicted in connection with her prostitution ring. Her charges included pandering and tax evasion. She was known for having many famous and wealthy clients. Her three year sentance was considered harsh by the public and caused some widespread outrage, especially at the fact that her customers had not been punished.
In 1971 The Happy Hooker: My Own Story was released by Xaviera Hollander. This book was notable for it's frankness for the time. It was cosidered to have given a positive view writing about sex. There have also been plays and movies released about prostitution over the years.
There have been some "famous Johns" noted in history. In 1989 Congressman Barnie Frank admitted to paying for sex. The US House of Representatives voted to repremand him. Leader of the Natiobal Association of Evangelicals, was removed from his position after having admitted to solicitation of a male prostitute for sex and methamphetamines. David Vitter, a Louisiana Senator was identified as a client of Debra Jean Palfrey, the D.C. Madam's Washington D.C. prostitution ring.
Whether you are for legalization or against it, one fact that remains true is that it's not going anywhere. Anyway you look at it, legalizing prostitution has many pros and cons.

There is always the opinion that bringing vices within the jurisdiction of the law will make it "safer", whether those vices are drugs, prostitution, gambling, or even drinking. While this is probably true to some degree (for example, I can safely gamble within a casino or buy a drink in a restaurant if I wish to), it certainly does not eliminate health and safety concerns. The spread of disease is certainly a factor in limiting prostitution as a "legal business" as is the safety of the women involved. No matter what precautions are taken, if a man is alone with a woman he does not know for the purpose of having sex, an element of danger is involved. Keeping prostitution illegal hardly eliminates the danger, and in fact it likely heightens the threat to a woman's physical safety.
I'm certain prostitution will not go away, but will ride the fence on this one and say I don't know if it would be better to legalize it or not. No opinion either way from me this time...
I think they should legalize it because it will still be out there no matter what. Nice hub, like the hooker ; )
they should legalize it, so I can earn more money.
Who knows if they will ever legalize it......I just hate to see so many women in such a dangerous profession.
what about us men? I never know whats going to happen to me once I enter that room.
If prostitution is legalized before marijuana there is something seriously wrong with our system. Yeah its ok for women to sale their bodies, give out diseases, make the husband happy while the wife is home alone with the kids. Just don't inhale. What about the women, who is going to regulate this, will there be sexual harrassment guidelines, pay scales, insurance? Ofcourse not, it is easier to open yourlegs than get an education and a real job. If you are female with kids, most of our public financial aide is in place for you. If you are a single working mother with a real job all of your opportunities are limited, so we should all just be whores and make the whole problem "go away" How can anyone justify that?

well what about us men selling our bodies, I am really offended that no one cares about us.
I think anyone who is in that profession deserves due consideration. I don't think it's that men aren't cared about in this situation, but it is not as common to see men in the profession.
you must never have been to West Holllywood.
No, I've never been there.
GT, guys are a dime a dozen, we don't have to pay, men are waiting in line for an insecure women. Ofcourse It doesn't seem as bad as female prostitutes, What is your going rate?

@ Lucey its a scary place for a cute guy after dark. I'd rather be in South Central after dark than West Hollywood.
@ dori- maybe a little weed or a few beers. It don't take much to convince me.
@Goldentoad:
How do you protect yourself?
All I can do is run very fast before they get a good pinch.
Sounds stressful.
being a good lookin straight guy in some parts of LA can be just that
This is very interesting Lucey. I just read that 85% of prostitutes were victims of sexual abuse as a child, and the average age for entry into this 'profession' is 13. 13! It seems like arresting the prostitue is punishing the victim. This is a very good hub, really got me thinking. Thank you.
Thanks Treading Concrete. I find it interesting to. I would like to see something put in place to make things safer for them.
I agree. The porn industry revamped after AIDS became a reality. Unfortunately, It would take a lot of effort to convince people that prostitutes need our help.
That is a sad and unfortunate truth.
legalize it

Watcha Lucey,
interesting dilemma, not sure. I don't think the arguments that legalisation will make it safer for women are valid, crooks and thugs always work around the law, nor do I think that it will significantly stem the spread of infection. The 'trade' has been practised for a long time, long enough for it to affect all the areas the antis use in their arguments but we're still here; and is it men or women, or both, that are being exploited? It's a bit odd over here, working girls are charged tax, effectively making HM's Inland Revenue a pimp:-)
