Toilet: How it Works
72The earliest form of toilet was "water closet" by Thomas Crapper in the nineteenth century. The mechanism of how a toilet works is same with little changes.
A basic toilet has two main parts basically made from vitreous china: a tank and a bowl.
Some toilets are cast as a single piece while others are made in two separate parts that are joined together.
The tank houses all the working parts. Several types of mechanisms are used for a toilet's basic operation.
Here is how the most common mechanism works:
Toilet: How it works
When the construction of the toilet is complete and it is ready for use, both tank and bowl are partly filled with water. Passages between the bowl and the closet bend form a trap and always remain filled with water. This blocks the rise of sewer gasses.
When we flush the trip lever, it lifts a rubber stopper from the flush valve thus allowing water in the tank to flow into the bowl.
The pressure of the water forces the bowl's water and waste down the waste pipe. The water flowing into the bowl also cleans the bowl.
When the tank of a basic toilet empties, a float ball drops, activating the ballcock that releases water into the tank. Now the tank is again filled with water and ready to be used.
