You know what I'm talking about...the miracle fat loss pills, magical weight loss belts, the lose 10 pounds in one day cleanses the do it all ab machines, etc, etc, etc!
I hope you haven't fallen into the trap that many of the gimmick marketers have out there. The truth is that the only methods for toning stomach muscles that are effective require work and discipline!
I believe that the two areas that most are misguided on are 1)Nutrition and, 2) Workout Structure. Let's talk about each of these in a little more depth!

Nutrition
This is probably the most important in toning stomach muscles revolves around nutrition. Without proper nutrition, you will see limited results...if any. The first thing that I must point out is that "diets" don't work! Most of those fad/crash diets (low-card, low-fat, etc) will actually slow you down in your pursuit of a flat stomach.
Why?
It's simple. Each of those diets are lacking in one of the 3 important macronutrients (Carbs, protein, and fat) which are essential in staying healthy and maintaining muscles mass. By cutting out or drastically reducing any one of these three you run the risk of losing MUSCLE mass and lowering your metabolic rate. Not good!
You need to develop a well balanced nutrition plan that includes all 3 macronutrients and all your vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that your body needs to keep you a lean, mean, fat-burning machine!
You also need to cut back on your calorie intake if you want to burn that fat around the midsection. You could go to the gym for an hour everyday of the week, but if you overeat everyday you won't lose any weight!
Workout Structure
The second most important thing for toning stomach muscles is workout structure. Many people are misguided here because they think that doing 1,000 crunches a day is going lead to a flat stomach. This is just plain wrong! It is not possible to spot reduce! This is another one of those myths that people can't let go of because they see the ripped people on infomercials promoting an ab-machine-lounge-doohicky and think that's how the models got their flat stomachs. Those models got their abs by following a proper nutrition and exercise program!
Ok...back to the workouts. While you do need to do abdominal exercises to build and develop those muscles, ab exercises should be a small portion of your workout. The rest of your workout should consist of full-body, multi-joint exercises that emphasize large muscles. This will increase your heart rate and metabolic rate which in turn burns the most calories. Working the large muscles in your body stimulates the release of hormones that help build muscle and burn fat! You will not get this same response doing crunches or cardio all day! Even better is that not only will you burn calories during your workout, you will burn additional calories for up to 48 hours following your workout while your body rebuids and repairs your muscles. Pretty sweet, huh?!
So, if you truly want to lose weight and burn fat hit the weight floor (free weights!) and do some squats, lunges, chest press, pull-ups, etc. Do these exercises at a relatively high intensity with short rest (you can talk to your friend when you're done!). This will maximize your time at the gym so you can burn the most calories in the shortest amount of time possible!
When it comes to toning stomach muscles, these are the two keys. If you understand and apply these to your routine you are well on your way to getting that flat stomach!
