Hi Justin, It all depends weather you are using these directories to bring traffic to your site or SEO. I have ranked them using Alexa to give people a better idea what directories have the most traffic. Since you are trying to get backlinks for seo purposes, the list would be changed around a little.
Many people believe pagerank is dead and isnt worth anything anymore. I personally think it is still alive and kicking but...
I believe submitting 100 articles to a directory for backlinks and seo purposes is worth little more weight in Google than just one backlink from the same directory. Google only seem to be counting 1 or 2 backlinks from a domain these days to combat search engine link spam. The trick is to submit your article to as many different article directories as possible and have backlinks pointing for lots of different ip addresses.
Hi Aaron. Thanks for the response. Yea that sounds like a good perspective on it and I think you are right. From looking at siteexplorer though, at least backlinks reflected there do show sometimes multiple links from one article directory, but many times neither yahoo or google shows the links at all. I agree with you overall though because the more ip addresses, probably the better. Thanks again!

I am currently submitting articles to build back links for my new site (about 1 month old). Just wondering if I were to submit 10 articles to 10 different articles directories using the same article, would it be counted as 10 different backlinks? Or it won't help much because of the duplicate article issue?

I read somewhere that Article directories is no longer an ideal way to increase the backlink of our sites? Due to lots of spam directories and people using directories only with the idea of getting backlinks SE's have changed the algoritham as no now directories wont play an important role in backlinking. Is that true?

I think article base is going to be the top directory in a few years ezine articles is getting a huge head about themselves and pushing away people that contribute to their website but they are still top dog for the moment.

from my experience articlealley is nofollow. i'd replace it with A1Articles or articledashboard instead. both of which are PR of 5

Ezinearticles and goarticles are two of my favorites. I am trying to grow my list to about 10 directories I habitually can trust to not over police the articles, and provide a strong one way link. I see these are sorted by Alexa TR and not so much the PR or age of the domain. Do you feel the alexa ranking is more vital to deciding which at the top directories? I am assuming your answer would be yes.
