Town of the Bull

A question was asked about what the name of a town called El Toro would create in one's mind.

The first thing I thought of was the Walt Disney cartoon Ferdinand the Bull, about a bull that enjoyed flowers. Next, I thought of Mexico, Texas, and Southern California. The opera Carmen came to mind as well. This all caused me to remember the wedding of an acquaintance several years ago. She and her fiance found a production company that staged weddings as Spanish bull fights in an arena in which the bride and groom were the Queen and King of Spain.

In the end, I remember that the United States Marine Corps Air Base in El Toro near Lake Forest, California is no longer open. It was decommissioned in the 1990s. However, This area of California is still remembered as El Toro. Looking for additional cities in the US and Mexico shown as El Toro on maps, I found none other.

Lake Forest, California

The motto of Lake Forest is "Remember the past, challenge the future." This reminds us of the historical importance of this area and today's talent and innovation resident there that can bring about changes for the good in the next decades. Lake Forest is a young city, founded only in December 1991 in southern Orange County, below Los Angeles. After Mexico made a land grant in 1846 in a time of American railroading progress, the area was named El Toro for a herd of local ranch bulls.

At the turn of the 20th century, a large forest of fast-growing trees was planted and in the 1960s, an oil company laid out a planned community called Lake Forest near El Toro Marine Base.

Today, the city fathers describe their local as Mediterranean, with a fast-growing eucalyptus forest, lakes, green ways, and recreation areas. Horse ranches for competitive dressage are well known.
