Top 10 Childhood Sweets
72Recently, I was strolling round a seaside town, wandering in and out of shops. One shop I came across was an old fashioned sweet shop, with a poster claiming that your childhood memories will be relived in this store. Upon entering I was confronted with hundreds of shelves of old fashioned sweets, the ones which you bought as a young child, and seemed to get millions for pennies. The nostalgia was overwhelming, and is why I wrote this hub. Here are 10 of my favourite sweets of my childhood, which unfortunately aren’t sold by many retailers nowadays…
10-Flying Saucers
Flying Saucers would cost about 1p each, and would come in a variety of pastel colours. They would melt in the mouth, leaving you with a mound of fizzy sherbet on your tongue. Flying Saucers were not to everyone’s taste within my circle of friends, but definitely one to remember.
9- Fruit Salads
Fruit Salads were wrapped in an orange and yellow wrapper, and would cost you in the region of 2-3p. Surprisingly, for something made out of pure sugar, the taste was quite fruity. It was one of those sweets which you would chew on forever, which made it worth the extra couple of pence.
8-Candy Lipsticks
Candy lipsticks would cost around 5p, probably due to its packaging. The lipstick was a cylinder shaped raspberry flavoured candy stick which looked like lipstick. Definitely one for the girls. The plastic packaging meant you could save some for later- one of the more elegant childhood sweets!
7-Cherry Lips
The fun you could have with Cherry Lips! Balancing this lip-shaped piece of cherry chew-sweet on your mouth was hilarious for the young children who would be willing to fork out around 3p for one of these sweets. The cherry flavour made this sweet a favourite amongst many.
6-Chocolate Mice
Chocolate Mice did everything it said on the tin- they were mouse shaped chocolate. The mice came in either milk chocolate or white chocolate, and would cost about 3p for one. These were the perfect chocolate fix in a bag full of jellies.
5-Drumstick Lollies
Drumsticks would sell for around 10p, but the extra expense was worth it. A Drumstick was basically a rectangular piece of raspberry and vanilla chewing candy on a stick, but it tasted delicious. Definitely one of the top retro sweets.
4-Gems
Gems were either white or chocolate flavoured candy sprinkled with hundreds and thousands. They sold at 1p each, and tasted magical (probably down to the chocolate hit teamed with the mental image of all of those fabulous colours). Gems are still one of my favourite sweets but are sadly in short supply.
3- Love Hearts
Love Hearts are one of the classic treats of most people’s childhoods (and are still around today). For around 20p you could get a whole packet of delicious sweets engraved with romantic messages- perfect for a gift or to keep to yourself. The good news is that Love Hearts are still around today in many sweet shops.
2- Dip Dab
For around 10p you could experience the magic of a Dip Dab. The contents included an extra-sweet strawberry lollipop and a good supply of sherbet to dip your lollipop into. A Dip Dab was one of the main staples in a good bag of carefully selected sweets.
1- Dolly Beads
Dolly Beads were a favourite amongst nearly all of my childhood friends, and probably caused the most trouble. Little beads of candy were weaved through an elastic band which made the perfect catapult for firing at people. Not much of the candy will have been eaten, due to the firing capabilities of the elastic they were attached to, but one of the greatest and funniest sweets your local sweet shop had to offer.

I like IiiiiiT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the comments guys!
Being from England, i don't know whether many of these sweets are available in America, but I'm glad you liked the hub! My personal favourite are white Gems, they're delicious!
We had the candy lipstick, the candy lips, and the candy necklaces. You guys missed out on pixie stix; colored sugar in a giant straw. My teeth hurt from thinking about it.
My mouth is watering ater reading this! My personal fave was probably the Dip Dabs, or the candy lipsticks MMM
EYEAM - we do actually get pixie stix here in the UK, some sweet shops import food from the US and pixie stix is one of them. Great for eating before going out, you don't need any alcohol as the sugar rush carries you through!
I remember when you could get 8 fruit salad for a penny -- I used to get four of those, and four black jacks (liquorice the same shape as the fruit salad).
Hi Teresa,
I remember Black Jacks too! I wasn't a huge fan, but I remember my best friend eating them until her teeth and tongue went black!
lol
hey cool hub, i'm a big fan

What a cute idea for a hub :) Sadly, I only recognize two of the candies. My kids still love the little candy lipsticks!
