With Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fights and demonstrations slowly becoming a worldwide phenomenon, many have traveled the world to seek out the best martial arts and master the techniques. Military and police forces all around the world combine martial arts techniques from different fields to be used during hand-to-hand combat and as part of arrest and self-defense methods. Martial arts vary in scope and variety; some prioritize striking movements, grappling maneuvers, with weapons or a combination of all three. While they vary from one another, they all share the same similarity; when used correctly and with force, martial arts are deadly. To pick a list of deadliest or strongest martial arts is a subjective matter; debates have arisen from the topic, many vouching for one martial arts technique over another and vice versa. We explore some of the more dangerous forms of martial arts practiced by its practitioners:

Martial Arts Forms

Kalarippayattu
Kalarippayattu

Kalarippayattu

One of the oldest forms of martial arts in existence, Kalarippayattu originated from Kerala, in South India. Practitioners seek to instill a high level of intellect and spirituality by utilizing mantra shastra and tantra shastra. A skilled Kalarippayattu practitioner who has achieved that high level of spirituality is not only well-versed in striking, grappling and different weaponry skills but has the ability to sense movements from the opponent and defend before even being attacked. By developing psychic-like senses and agile movements, Kalarippayattu is quickly making a comeback in the modern era after being portrayed in a positive light in famous movies.

Taekwondo

Originated in Korea and the national sport of South Korea, Taekwondo loosely means “the way of the foot and the fist”. With over 70 million practitioners and over 4 million black belt holders worldwide, taekwondo was included in the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000. Taekwondo is famous for its high impact kicks, with rationale being kicks having a much longer reach than punching and if executed swiftly, is considered the strongest weapon for a martial artist.

Karate

Literally meaning hand, karate is a full contact martial art originating from Okinawa in Japan that incorporates striking, grappling and locks to takedown an opponent. Practitioners of karate are called karatekas and they number as much as 23 million worldwide. Made famous by the film The Karate Kid starring Pat Morita as a karate master, karate is highly deadly martial art technique with current MMA world champions practicing karate as their main striking ability.

Sambo

Originated in the Russian Federation in 1938, Sambo is a grappling martial art with origins in Judo and other Eastern European wrestling techniques. Sambo differs from other martial arts with its different ranking system. Instead of colored belts, Sambo practitioners are awarded ratings such as Master of Sports and International of Sports. A special technique of Sambo called Combat Sambo is extensively used by military and Special Forces worldwide to neutralize enemies in a close combat situation. With its strong grappling techniques, Sambo practitioners can takedown opponents and maim a part of their body with a lock in a matter of mere seconds.

Martial Arts

Muay Thai

Thailand’s national sport is taking the martial arts world by storm. Called the “Art of Eight Limbs”, an accomplished Muay Thai practitioner has the prowess and ability to strike using their shins, elbows, hands and knees instead of four contact points in fists and feet. Mainly a form of kickboxing, Muay Thai practitioners usually get opponents into a clinch, a hold an opponent has difficulty to get out of, and kneeing them directly at the heart, downing an opponent quickly and effectively.

Krav Maga

Literally meaning “hand to hand combat” and developed as a form of street fighting in Israel, Krav Maga has become one of the fastest growing martial arts around the globe currently. Krav Maga focuses more on threat defense instead of offensive attacks, making it ultimately practical and useful in the current global context. Different variations of Krav Maga are used in military forces around the world and in Special Forces like Israel’s Mossad, FBI and the British SAS.

Wing Chun

Specializing in close combat, Wing Chun practitioners are taught to be efficient, practical and quick on their feet. Believing the use of the least amount of force is the best way in battle, Wing Chun practitioners seek out the quickest way to take down an opponent through unique striking abilities, aiming blows at the throat, shin and sweeping opponents off the ground quickly with kicks. Wing Chun practitioners also have the ability to chain attacks, making their attacks deadly if not blocked and stopped prematurely.

Martial Arts Warrior Training

Capoeira

Originated in Brazil, Capoeira is unique in the sense that it incorporates music and dance to the martial art. Used by slaves in the 1800s, it was disguised as a form of dance moves to trick slave owners into thinking the practitioners were merely dancing when they were really mastering techniques and sharpening their Capoeira moves. Capoeira is a form of martial art that is considered one of the hardest to counter since its moves are unorthodox yet very lethal. By implementing quick kicks and flowing punches, Capoeira is definitely one of the more unique martial arts globally.

Ninjitsu

The way of the ninja. Practiced by shinobis in ancient Japan, Ninjitsu is considered one of the most unconventional martial arts techniques around the world today. Ninjitsu practitioners in ancient Japan were assassins and spies; hence their methods were based on stealth and taking out an opponent when he does not see it coming. Ninjitsu practitioners are taught various skills and weaponry and are considered guerilla masters of the samurai sword.

Silat

While the origin of Silat is relatively unknown, and the popularity of the martial art is still considered low, what is known is Silat was created by the Malay people in Southeast Asia. Used mainly as a war dance and a form of self defense, Silat practitioners are skilled strikers trained to maintain a strong stance while applying slow and subtle movements with unique dance-like qualities to trick opponents into believing Silat practitioners were ill-trained and hence, making mistakes that Silat practitioners can take advantage of.

Martial Arts Odyssey

Boxing

With historical references since the period of ancient Greeks, boxing has been refined and retooled numerous times in the modern context. Boxing in the modern world now mainly follows the Marquees of Queensberry rules with rounds and a three-round knockout system. Boxing is strictly striking using gloved fists, with different stances and different methods of strikes involved. A strong knockout boxer, like world famous Muhammad Ali, famous for the catchphrase “Float like a butterfly, Sting like a bee” could knock down an opponent and knock their lights out unconscious with a single punch.

With plenty of martial arts techniques around the globe, a martial artist is definitely spoiled for choice. While there will most definitely be debates with regards to the most deadly martial arts technique known to man, a man who can incorporate several of the above martial arts styles and make it his own would indeed be one of the most dangerous man alive

forlan is right. Silat comes from Indonesia. The complete name is Pencak Silat. As a proof that it is from Indonesia, look at relief at walls of temples like Prambanan. There are depictions of Pencak Silat. It existed since at least 9th century.

Great work and nicely done.Good to have written Karate comes from Okinawa, very few people knows it. Just one thing, I think Wing Chun and close combat are different. Wing Chun is a martial art and close combat is a military fighting system

Keep studying. Interesting Gymnastics in the first video. Not so sure about all American Kids being lazy or not knowing Geography, but interesting videos none the less. Karate actually can mean two different things depending on how the kanji are written. It can mean Empty hand, as the modern expression, or it can mean China Hand, which is the older expression.

Nice compendium on the martial art styles.

The current trend of martial art contests can never portray the deadliest martial art, because you need to use its deadly force. These contest have rules which take the art and make it a brawl. Brawls last too long and make it a contest rather than a killing system.

Sport versus Combat

Entertainment versus Survival

In addition, the environment and the conditions of an engagement make one system more powerful than another. Wing Chun could be done in a phone booth (if any still existed), while systems that rely on kicking would be at at disadvantage in close quarters.

.....my opinion

As you mere mortals know by now, I am the worlds ONLY TRUE EXPERT ON EVERYTHING THAT HAS EVER EXISTED SINCE THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF EVERYTHING.

So in my ABSOLUTE EXPERT opinion... I must say that the deadliest martial art is beyond a shadow of a doubt Ninjutsu !!! The martial art of the Shadow Warrior. I am (as you mere non-experts know), an expert in all the martial arts forms of the world.Even the millions of martial arts that exist in all 23900000780000067 galaxies of the universe...but Ninjutsu is the deadliest of them all. As a supreme expert of both Karate and Ninjutsu let me compare these two arts with each other in technique.

(1)KARATE in technique against punch:

Opponent punches.

Karate expert blocks and punches opponent with powerfull punch in abdomen.

opponent stumbles to ground and is full of pain and cannot breath...

Very impressive !!!!

(2)NINJUTSU in technique against punch:

Opponent punches.

Ninja evades and slips to the side of opponent and grabs his arm and breaks his elbow in one fluid motion.

Ninja now positions himself behind opponont and strikes his spinal chord while holding him by his hair.

As opponent loses consiousness the Ninja breaks his neck and dissapears into the shadows... Need I say more ?

What about MMA? I know there are many arts involved (It's mixed martial arts) but it has evolved to art of it's own!

Although I think it's the best art to study, it's not the deadliest. Krav Maga is the deadliest system out there.

just a comment about Jeet Kune Do by the late Bruce Lee. Jeet Kune Do is not a Martial art form, as the master says it ismore of a fighting system. The difference being having forms and rules on the traditional martial arts but jeet kune do has no true form. Jeet Kune Do is you. Its like someone picks you out of your house and put you in a battle arena, the way you fight there would be your Jeet Kune Do. No one can say you're wrong, its your fight.

I spent a lot of time in martial arts(around 14 years) and I have to say that I am really impressed with what I have seen of Krav Maga.

And I have seen Aikido masters that have made hardened Karate black belts blink with surprise.

I agree with many of the comments. This list may not represent the 10 deadliest martial arts systems (I feel it isn't even close), but it's pretty decently compiled. Other than a few errors (like the fact that "karate" means "empty hand" without a doubt), it's decent. Wing Chun definitely has a place in the list in my opinion, as it represents some of the most effective in-fighting techniques and philosophy and training in the world. Ninjutsu shouldn't be left out, as the EXPERT mentioned (lol), and Aikido is an excellent and quick-to-learn system that can be quickly deadly as well (although death-blows are NOT a part of the teaching). However, how can one overlook Dim Mak techniques? Dim Mak is about death-dealing pressure-point strikes and finger-strike techniques that can quickly disable opponents, making it a part of some of the deadliest regimens of training on the planet. I'd have mentioned that, and definitely don't overlook any assassin's art (like the assassin-adaptation of various Ninja Clan systems, as mentioned above).

Glad to see such interest in the Martial Arts, as they have been a huge part of my life for over 20 years now and I love them. Keep studying and practicing, everyone!

Wow, I learned a ton here! I hadn't heard of any of these except Taekwondo, Karate (it used to be an aftershave) and boxing.

I very much admire the inner discipline required to be good at martial arts.

Thanks for the education, SunSeven. Think I need to get out more or watch more Bruce Lee films.

Great i finally read something about ninjutsu.

I have done this martial art for over 8 years here in belgium, (where there are only 3 schools to learn this sport), had 3 stages in Japan, with the sensei, and all i can say, is, it is a great sport, and painfull. but learning to control the mind, learning to erase feelings like pain, like pain is only a state of the mind. well that's great.

Really liked your piece - and I liked the fact that I learned something new about styled I had never heard of. A bit contentious throwing Boxing in there but then again modern martial arts do have a boxing element (actually certain Chinese Styles are referred to as boxing or have boxing in their name).

I liked it on the whole.

It does'nt matter which fighting style is revered to be supreme. When its possible for anyone to be knocked unconcious or possibly killed by a single blow. And for the record, I've personaly beat a Taekwondo black belt senseless after he sucker punched me. I have no training what so ever.

Good work man ! Just be aware that knees and elbows, the heart of Muay Thai, is not allowed in Kickboxing, so there's no real comparison. Tough to squeeze everything in a list of 10, but in my opinion the deadliest one is from Thailand's neighbour, Cambodia, with their system Pradal Serey Bokator. One of their techniques is a high knee strike, followed by an elbow strike to the top of the head - a deadly Dim Mak point (only Martial Art where that is allowed !) You should also distinghuish between various forms of Silat, at least two of them --Pukulan Silat and Harimau Silat is quite vicious and effective, However at the end of the day, these are all sports to some extent, and nothing will be able to withstand pure Military Close Quarter Combat -- literally Killed or be killed, no rules & no gloves to save the other guy.

I am glad to see Kalarippayattu in your list. I am very intrigued by that martial art. It may have been the predecesor of the chinese martial arts, which precede karate.

As for the 10 bests martial arts for fighting, All of the martial arts are the best if you practice them. The components that make a fighter good are:

having techniques that you can apply when you are hurting, drunk, weak, feverish, or have a full belly. After all, we can all be as good as Bollywood heroes in our dojo or equivalent, or in a ring with rules and two months of preparation. But life takes different colors when you are attacked coming out of a night club or restaurant, after 6 hours partying, and while you are wearing a suit and tie, and you are exhausted.
