Bethesda-Gaithersburg-Frederick Metro Area

This a large metropolitan area located northwest of Washington D.C. in Montgomery and overllapping into Frederick County, Maryland. Bethesda, Gaithersburg, and Frederick lie in a diagonal SE - NW line along I-270 from the nation's capital. This highway roughly follows what was once a Native American trail. It later became a local toll road.

Although Bethesda is actually unincorporated, it is an important urban area next to DC. Its name comes from the name of a nearby church - the Bethesda Presbyterian Church (or the Bethesda Meeting House), which was built in 1820 and reconstructed in 1850. The church is named after Jerusalem's Pool of Bethesda. In Aramaic, beth hesda means house of mercy. Interestingly, Bethesda MD is home to the US Navel Medical Center, a true house of medical mercy, as well as to other hospitals and clinics and segments of the National Institutes of Health.

In 2007, the State of Maryland rose to Number One state in the total number of Engineers & PhD Scientists as a percentage of total workers (0.98%, nearly a full 1 percent). The percentage is much lower in most states. Kauffman Foundation, 2007 State New Economy Index.

Downtown is right next door to the National Institutes of Health, the National Library of Medicine, and the Bethesda Naval Medical Center. This surrounds the community with research and techology innovation and new jobs.

Gaithersburg MD adopted a commercial green building ordinance at the end of September 2008, which opens the way for more sustainability jobs in the metro area. The city already had in place residential and municipal green building ordinances in a move toward greater sustainability in the 21st century.

The city partnered with 307 others across America to sign the US Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement in 2006, became dedicated to meeting or exceeding the goals of the Kyoto Protocol, and has earned Tree City USA designation again for a run of 20 years.
