The Place of Many Fish Offers Many Jobs

The name Manchester was taken from a word in a Native American language meaning place of many fish, representing the waters of the nearby Merrimack River to the west of the present day city that has become center for Insurance, Education, and Healthcare services. Manchester, in Hillsborough County was incorporated in 1751. It was originally named Tyng's Town, then Harrytown, then Derryfield before becoming Manchester. As Tyng's Town, it had been given to the men of Captain William Tyng, who wore snow-shoes as they fought in the French and Indian War during 1703's severe northern winter.

The town finally became Manchester at the suggestion of someone that wished to name it after Manchester, England and to build a canal similar to that in the British city. rad to the Merrimack River were cut along native American Trails and the canal would be a useful transport addition around the waterfall in the river. Commerce and fishing were large industries and later, the waterfall was used to power textile mills.

The URL is the correct website for Manchester Community College in NH...the address in the box is for the MCC in Connecticut.

NHCTC-Manchester is the former name of NH's MCC. That link is no longer live.

Thanks!
