Intro to the List

This list is loosely based on the AFI's definition for Sci-Fi. "A genre that marries a scientific or technological premise with imaginative speculation." Please enjoy the pictures and video clips. At the end of the page I will explain more of the criteria for this list.


#10 - Back to the Future

A 1985 film directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Steven Spielberg. The film stars Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, as well as Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown, Crispin Glover, Lea Thompson as Marty's mother and Thomas F. Wilson.

Back to the Future tells the story of Marty McFly, a teenager who is accidentally sent back in time from 1985 to 1955. He meets his parents in high school, accidentally attracting his mother's romantic interest. Marty must repair the damage to history by causing his parents to fall in love, while finding a way to return to 1985.

#9 - Close Encounters of the Third Kind

  A 1977 film written and directed by Steven Spielberg. The film stars Richard Dreyfuss, François Truffaut, Melinda Dillon, Teri Garr, Bob Balaban and Cary Guffey.

The film is about Roy Neary, an Indiana electrical lineman, whose life changes after he has an encounter with an unidentified flying object. However, the United States government is also aware of the UFOs as is a team of international scientific researchers.



#8 - The Matrix

A film written and directed by the Wachowski brothers and produced by Joel Silver. It was released in March, 1999. The film was a huge box-office draw, starring Keanu Reaves and Lawrence Fishburn.

#7 - War of the Worlds (1953)

This film is the 1953 Technicolor narrative of the story created by H. G. Wells in 1896 England and published as a novel in 1898

#6 - Star Trek The Wrath of Khan

 A 1982 film directed by Nicholas Meyer. It was the second featured film based on the original television series. It starred the orginal cast, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, and Ricardo Montalban as Khan.



#5 - 2001 A Space Odyssey

A 1968 film directed by Stanley Kubrick. Critics today believe it is one of the greatest films of all time. The US Library of Congress selected it for preservation in it's National Film Registry. The movie deals with the evolution of man and it's interactions with other life.

#4 - Alien

 A 1979 film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto. An Alien monster attacks and kills members of the space crew.



#3 - Terminator 1984

 A 1984 film directed and co-written by James Cameron. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Terminator, Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor and Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese. The film takes place in 1984, introducing the concept of a "terminator" as a seemingly unstoppable cyborg assassin. The Terminator was sent back from the year 2029 by a race of artificially intelligent computer-controlled machines that were trying to kill off the entire human race.

#2 - E.T.

 A 1982 film co-produced and directed by Steven Spielberg. It starred Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore, Dee Wallace and Peter Coyote. It tells the story of Elliott (played by Thomas), a lonely boy who befriends a friendly extra-terrestrial, dubbed "E.T.", who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings help the extraterrestrial return home while attempting to keep it hidden from their mother and the government.



#1 - The Empire Strikes Back

A 1980 film sequel to Star Wars A New Hope. The film is set three years after the destruction of the Death Star. Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia Organa, and the rest of the Rebel Alliance are being pursued by Darth Vader and the elite forces of the Galactic Empire. While Han and Leia are chased across the galaxy by the Empire, Luke studies the Force under Jedi Master Yoda. Vader is secretly plotting a trap for Luke that will lead to a vicious confrontation and a shocking revelation. The film stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hammil, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, and James Earl Jones.

Based on the AFI definition of Sci-Fi. YOu can only pick one movie from a series of movies like Star Wars and Star Trek.
