Top 10 Songs You Hate Yourself for Loving
85
Songs You Hate to Love.
Like the haircut you wore for longer than you should have (maybe still), or the enormous speakers you couldn't bear to part with (are they still in your closet(?) or worse, your car?), or the clothes you wore in your early 20s you won't burn (they were cool once, and could be again), these are the songs you just can't get rid of.
You love 'em. You hate 'em. You hate yourself for loving them. They are the 10 songs you hate yourself for loving.
I'll Be There For You
10. I'll Be There For You
Admit it, even though you've heard it 8,374,931 times (and twice on the radio), you still love it. The Rembrandts' song, of course, not the Bon Jovi song. Did you know it was released as a single?
Isn't it nice to know that when you feel stuck in second gear, and it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year, that someone will be there for you. Friends, perhaps. Be sure to be there for them too.
Livin' La Vida Loca
9. Livin' La Vida Loca
She must be amazing, whoever she is, to make him take his clothes off and go dancing in the rain. I'm a little suspicious, though, of her superstitions, black cats and voodoo dolls. And anyone who has a new addiction for every day and night might just drive you loca.
That said, the song is fun. Crazy fun. It takes away your pain like a bullet to the brain.
What's Up?
8. What's Up
Those 4 Non Blondes were here one minute and gone the next, but "What's Up" is a question that will linger forever. I've often wondered why the song wasn't titled "What's Going On."
But, for those nights I cry sometimes when I'm lying in bed and I'm feeling a little peculiar, a little 4 Non Blondes cures what ails. 34 years and my life is still, I'm trying to get up that great big hill.

7. I'm Too Sexy
If ever there was a song it's okay to be embarrassed about loving, it is "I'm Too Sexy." Even if it's true, who goes around bragging about it. Any guesses on how the name Right Said Fred came about? Me neither, but they get an "A" for originality in name choice. The story of the band doesn't help either. It's a good thing they had a catchy song.
6. Footloose
5. Don't Worry, Be Happy
Yet another Tom Cruise movie featured on our list, this time Cocktail. Here's a little song Bobby McFerrin wrote. According to Wikipedia, "Don't Worry, Be Happy" was the first a cappella song to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Top 100.
"In every life you have some trouble. When you worry, you make it double. Don't worry, be happy." There is no better advice.
Shiny Happy People
4. Shiny Happy People
Okay, you have the "Don't Worry, Be Happy" thing down, you are now "Shiny Happy People." Admittedly, not one of REM's best, but one that everybody secretly loves.
A joke that was lost on many: "Shiny Happy People Holding Hands" is an ironic play on a Chinese propaganda poster. "Shiny Happy People" was released two years after the Tiananmen Square incident.

3. Making Love Out of Nothing At All
Choosing between Air Supply songs you hate yourself for loving is an exercise in futility. You love them all, and hate yourself for loving them all. The deciding factor, then, is the football reference in "Making Love Out of Nothing At All."
I could be completely wrong, but I doubt Graham Russell or Russell Hitchcock, the Air Supply dynamic duo, ever tackled or blocked anyone. Props though for the reference.
Ice Ice Baby
2. Ice Ice Baby
All right, stop. I know you thought "Ice Ice Baby" was going to be No. 1 on this countdown, but Robert Matthew Van Winkle (Vanilla Ice to those of us in the know) only makes it to No. 2. The staying power of "Ice Ice Baby" is quite beyond comprehension.
Will it ever stop? Yo, I don't know.
Final Countdown
1. Final Countdown
Yes, Europe's "Final Countdown" rounds out this countdown. All good things must come to an end.
We're leaving together, but still it's farewell. And maybe we'll come back to earth, who can tell?
I guess there's no one to blame. We're leaving ground. Will things ever be the same again?
I don't know, but...IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN.

I have heard them all before and still
remember "Pack up you troubles" in your old kit bag and Smile Smile
Thank you for those precious memories.
Peter
I am still laughing and singing at the same time. Great HUB again! lol
LOL! I own What's Up? I still love it and sing it around the house! Great hub :)
Thanks, Bonnie. I'm glad to bring back good memories.
Marmalade, I'm sure you have plenty of precious memories. I'm happy this brought back a few.
Keep singing Doghouse. How can you not?
amy jane, I do too. I'm the only person I know who ever bought that CD, except you.
umm. make that 3. shhhhhh!
Bonnie
We could start out own fan club.
Air Supply! Ah, yes. Makin' Love... Out of Nothing at All. I think I must have sung that in my bedroom soooo many times in high school. *sigh*
Air Supply rules. It was so hard to pick one from them, but I had to. I couldn't leave them off the list.
I agree! Got an Air Supply cd with this one on it! LOL Wanna see my collection? Oh, and cassettes out the wazoo! Remember the old 8 tracks? Wish I had just stored the old tapes at least! LOL
Bonnie
Luckily, 8 tracks were making their departure as I was making my arrival. So my teenage experience was all about tapes. I'm telling you there are countless closeted Air Supply fans. There should be a support group for people afraid to admit it.
I agree. You have really done it this time, Peter! Since I couldn't get the song out of my head anyway, I have been forced to pull out the Air Supply cd. Currently, they are Lost in Love and I am lost in the music LOL.
I'm jealous. No cd player within reach. I may do a hub about this phenomenon.
Your list is just great...now I'm going to be singing "Be happy" for the rest of the day. Although I bet you omitted a few on purpose...Do I dare sing them out loud, I think Beat It, Thriller, Billy Jean etc by MJ should be on this list too..
I just love List hubs regards Zsuzsy
Thanks, Zsuzsy. I love Michael too, but I don't hate myself for loving them. I'm proud of those.
Steph, I'm sure you were just left speechless.
Mu mother like these songs. Not bad, good old memories.
Your mother has excellent taste, I'm sure.
wow!!! loved those music!!!
What a walk down memory lane, thanks for that, I very much enjoyed it.
Thanks jerry. It was great, wasn't it?
jvlagnada, there's no shame in unchained melody. This is 10 sings you hate yourself for loving. A different list perhaps. Thank you for stopping by, though. I appreciate it.
BeautyKazoo, thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm happy to have brought back some of those memories.
This is a terrific hub!!! Loved it.
Re Unchained Melody....that goes on the classic list of beautiful songs....IMO
Thanks, Shirley. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Ditto on Unchained Melody.
Where did you ever get an idea for a HUB like this?
Could it be http://hubpages.com/hub/The-100-Worst-Songs-that-w ?
If you're gonna steal my idea at least credit me for it.
DJFunktual, that is a nice hub, much more comprehensive. However, I did not steal your idea. I don't mean to burst your bubble, but there are these lists all over the net. I will be glad to add your hub as a link in this hub in a separate capsule with other similar lists if you like. Cool?
Thanks best of the web. I appreciate you reading.
Great work Peter, Its so funny some songs drive you crazy, yet you find you'll still humming them. The ones the kids like are even worse, they keep playing it over and over again, and sometimes one has to get out of the way in order to get some peace!
Thanks, Paper Money. I know what you mean.
It's hilarious that DJ Funktual thinks he invented lists!!!
His is a good list, to be sure, but it is kind of funny. Thanks, About-the-Home.
I'm in MrMarmalade's category: The only song I'm familiar with is "Don't Worry...," but I loved "Pack Up Your Troubles..." (if you remember that far back!) I enjoyed your commentary. Nice hub.
Thanks, Mr. Torpley. "Don't Worry" is a classic. I am familiar with "Pack Up Your Troubles" but no one should be ashamed of loving that song. Thanks for reading.
Invented lists? Yup. That's me. The internet too.
LOL!
I Also INVENTED Frozen Pizza and The Pet Rock.
Thumbs up on frozen pizza, not so much on the pet rock.
Well one has their ups and downs you know.
Check out http://hubpages.com/hub/Do-you-like-looking-at-Bea
You can console yourself with you work then. LOL.
I remember my parents playing Air Supply's Greatest Hits on road trips, over and over, as my brother and I sat in the back seat looking for a straight jacket...lol. Fun page!
Thanks, Lighstruck. In that case, you should check out my Air Supply Fans of the Word Unite hub. I'm glad you enjoyed.
My wife hates Air supply sooo much that she calls every whiny song she hears Air Supply.
I'll be playing a song for her and if it feels even slightly emo to her, she goes,"Who's that your playin' in there, Air Supply?
And then i get pissed off and have to defend it.
Air Supply needs no defense, my man. They are an American icon and their music will endure forever.
nice i lke footloose and don't worry be happy
Those are great songs, aren't they? Thanks commentonthis7, for commenting on this.
Lemmings PC game music is the best sound ever.
Hate to be fact checker here but Air Supply IS NOT AN AMERICAN ICON.
They are from Australia, dude. and they are the suckiest suckers whoever sucked!
Lemmings, thanks. Perhaps the next list.
Funktaul, they are Aussie, but they didn't explode until they hit the good ol' USA. They are still iconic here, but I should have been more careful in my word choice, you are right. I'll grant they ooze cheese, but that's why you hate yourself for loving them.
I'm not ashamed to admit, I like "Final Countdown." I saw Europe open for Def Leppard at the Anaheim Amphitheater. Great fun. There's something about that opening synth line - it's very powerful. ...but Def Lep kicked their ass!
I love ice ice baby but since I'm papi chino I sing rice rice baby LOL!!!
There you go, Constant Walker, way to be proud. I'm proud of you for it.
Too funny, NinjaGuru. LOL!!! Thanks for reading.
NinjaGuru, you do know that the bass line in Ice Ice Baby is a blatantly "borrowed" rhythm from the Queen/David Bowie song Under Pressure, don't you?
If not, check this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdaHCLlBkWU
Love the hub, it really brings back memories :)
Thanks, Karen N. I appreciate that. I'm glad you enjoyed.
Some absolute classics here, I remember loving the 4 Non Blondes record - and you can't beat a bit of Final Countdown every now and then =D
Classics indeed. You gotta' love 'em.
