Number 10
Germany 1 England 5
An Incredible night that will not be forgotten. England travelled to the home of their arch rivals Germany in a world cup qualifier back in september 2001. The Germans the favourites given their home advantage and England's indifferent start to the qualifying campaign. The English fans were quietly confident but no one could have even contemplated what was to unfold that night, not even in the wildest dreams of the most diehard Englishmen.
The night seemed to be going as predicted with Germany taking an early lead, however it was to be short lived. From the moment England drew level they seemed unstoppable, the Liverpool contingent of Owen, Heskey and Gerrard all neeting to put the Germans to the sword with devasating affect. Before that night Germany had only lost a handful of games in their own backyard but never had they lost by such a margin.
Number 9
Torvill & Dean 'Bolero' 1984
Not the most manly of sports granted, but this was the performance of a lifetime. Straight 6.0s across the board as the Nottingham based duo wowed the judges with a flawless performance. Skating to the tune Bolero.
Number 8
David Beckham's freekick vs Greece 2001
With literally seconds on the clock, England seemed to be facing failure square in the face. Despite the heroics of that night in Munich (number 10), only months later they seemed to be going out of the World cup at the qualifying stages.
Trailing 2-1 at Old trafford with only seconds left, England needed a miracle. A freekick was to give them one last chance, up stepped David Beckham. A spectacular free kick found its way into te greek net, giving England the all important point they needed to qualify. The weight of a nation hung heavy on his shoulders but he soundly delivered.
Number 7
Liverpool vs AC Milan 2005
Traling 3-0 at half time in the Champions league final against AC Milan, no one gave Liverpool a chance. They looked dead and buried, they'd been second best in the first half by some distance and no one could argue with the scoreline.
What was to happen showed tremendous fighting spirit and determination as the Reds of Liverpool clawed back to 3-3. With penalties on the horizon the then Liverpool keeper pulled off a fine save to deny Milan, forcing the game to penalties. From there, there was only ever going to be one winner. Liverpool were penalty kings, only ever having lost in one penalty shoot out. They didn't dissappoint, they were on the ascendancy, Milan deflated by the lead they'd thrown away. Jerzy Dudek was the hero saving from Schevchenko and liverpool collected their fifth European Cup on this memorable night.
Number 6
Manchester United v Bayern Munich 1999
1-0 down with 89 minutes on the clock. United were facing the prospect of defeat on the biggest stage of all, the Champions League final. However the next minute was to flip the history books on their heads as United scored not one, but two goals in as many minutes to take the ol trophy back to Manchester for the first time in 40 years.
Number 5
Gareth Edwards Try vs New Zealand 1973
Simply referred to as 'that try' as it was that damn good! The bah-bahs facing arguably one of the greatest All black sides of all time, makes this try all the more remarkable.
A long kick by the all blacks winger was caught by Phil Bennett almost in his own in goal area. he then dodges three man mountain like figures, evading their tackles ' this is great stuff!' screams the commentator 'brilliant! he reiterates. Bennett off loads the ball to Williams who passes it through four sets of hands before finally finding the legendary Welsh scrum-half Gareth Edwards who finishes in superb style down the left flank.
Brilliant! - Cliff Morgan
Number 4
Michael Owen's goal vs Argentina 1998
A memorable goal in which Michael owen announced himself as one of the best strikers in the world. At only 18 it was only his second start for the three lions.
With England trailing 1-0 to their arch rivals Argentina, Owen picks up the ball on the half-way line, skips passed two Argentinian defenders as if they're not even there, his electric pace taking into the penalty area where he lets fire and scores one of the greatest individual goals of all time.
Number 3
Jimmy Glass 94th min goal for Carlisle
Relegation loomed on the horizon. Carlisle United looked to be dropping out of the football league, with literally seconds on the clock. The scoreline of 1-1 wasn't enough to keep them up, they had one last chance.
A corner deep into time added on was their only hope, Jimmy Glass their on loan keeper had came up. A weak corner is whipped in but the Plymouth keeper gets a hand to it, the entire Carlisle team is in the Plymouth box including their keeper! the weak punch only goes as far as Jimmy Glass who sticks out a leg, connecting....and in! fans spill on the pitch as Jimmy Glass has kept Carlisle up with the last kick of the season!
Number 2
Johnny Wilkinson's drop goal vs Australia 2003
An epic final in which was tied 17-17, England had more than matched the Austrlians in their own back yard. Now with only 26 seconds left on the clock, the ball falls to Wilkinson who is in the pocket, he struck it beautifully as it sailed through the posts and won the World Cup for England 20-17.
