There’s something about zombie movies that seem to capture our attention above all other types of horror movies. The idea that some force can not only cause the dead to rise again, but to devour the living in a never ending quest for human flesh is truly un-nerving. Unlike most forms of horror that involve some sort of monster. The masked psycho that hides In the shadows and stalks unsuspecting teens, or the monster that stalks the same teens ( they seem to be such easy targets……you’d think they would learn by now. ) Unlike them, zombies not only go after everyone they can be anyone. Imagine your own mother or best friend who’s normal one day turn into a mindless creature intent on cracking your skull open like a walnut and chewing on your brains…………….mmmmmmmmmmm brains.

But what other form of horror can be so entertaining and teach us so much about ourselves, and the culture that we live in. Here’s a list that I’ve created of 10 zombie movies that in my opinion or some of the best out there.

#10 Dead Snow (2009)

What can I say Nazi’s who are zombies equals good times for all. Though the actual story is very simple ( a bunch of medical students go into the mountains to get drunk and or laid ) and has many clichés from evil dead and other evil dead knock off’s. It’s still fun to watch and pretty gory to boot…….did I mention the zombies are Nazi’s.

#9 White Zombie (1932)

Considered the first zombie movie to feature re-animated corpses, and starring Bela Lugosi this movie premiered in New York and received much criticism. The story was based on the 1928 play called Zombie. In which Bela Lugosi’s character plays a man called Murder Legendre who uses magic powers to control people. Not my personal favourite ( I think the acting was overall crappy which really hurt the movie ) but worth a look at least, especially if your into these older movies.

The only movie I’ve ever seen that a zombie fights a shark ( I won’t spoil it for you who wins if you haven’t seen this one yet ) It’s also one of the last modern zombie movies that ties the creation of the undead menace to voodoo magic. Also one of the first to show people who have been bitten turn into zombies themselves, and not just be devoured. Most of the zombies look very realistic, especially given the age of the movie, and the acting is pretty decent with a healthy dose of cheese to it.

#8 Zombie (1979)

#7 28 Days Later (2002)

28 Days Later and its sequel 28 Weeks Later are considered by many to not really be zombie movies at all. There argument is that because the “zombies” aren’t really dead. In my opinion if zombies are ever going to walk the earth, this is probably what there going to be like. I can’t see some crackpot mad scientist finding the magic formula to bring the dead back, but I sure as hell could see that same crackpot scientist making a disease that could render a human into a mindless ragging monster that runs itself to death. If you haven’t seen this one you are truly missing out , in a word its awesome.

#6 Zombie Strippers (2008

I think the name says it all, like Dead Snow except the zombies are ………….wait I know this is a hard one, yup you guessed it there zombies. Despite its bad acting, tonnes of clichés, and virtually no story line its still a great movie to watch. And yes if you haven’t seen this and are wondering, Jenna Jameson does get naked in the movie A LOT……..so enjoy.

#5 Planet Terror (2007)

In my opinion the better half of the Rodriguez/Tarentino grind house tribute. The story is about an experimental bio-weapon which is released turning people into zombies and a small band of survivors fight to stay alive. It’s one of those movies that looks amazing in the theatre with its attempt to look like an old horror flick from the 70‘s. And who quotes like “ I want to eat your brains……and gain your knowledge “ how can you go wrong . Just please don’t do what a friend of mine once did and use that quote to try to pick up a girl……he was what we liked to call “special”

#4 Dawn Of The Dead (1978)

What would you do to survive the zombie apocalypse, would you head for the hills and hide. Or perhaps find an isolated island hopefully in a warm tropical location. Nah screw that lets head to the mall. The story follows a TV reporter his executive girlfriend and two S.W.A.T team members who decide they need a new wardrobe and decide to hideout at the local mall. It’s like Gilligan’s island except with zombies, a cult classic if there was ever one to be had. Not to mention the 2004 re-make is just as good ( something that usually doesn’t happen in movies )

# 3 Day Of The Dead (1985)

The third living dead movie to be made by George A. Romero, and could be considered a sequel to Dawn of The Dead. The story takes place in an isolated military outpost in the Florida everglades ( kinda like a mall only a little wetter ) where a team of scientists and soldiers attempt to find a way to stop or control the zombies that are at there doorstep. Eventually everything goes to hell in a hand basket, and well you guessed it the zombies have a roaring good time tearing apart and eating the survivors.

#2 Shaun Of The Dead (2004)

Shaun of the Dead Shaun of the Dead
Price: $6.43
List Price: $12.98
Shaun of the Dead [Blu-ray] Shaun of the Dead [Blu-ray]
Price: $12.39
List Price: $29.98

What guy doesn’t love a romantic comedy……….okay not many including myself but throw zombies into the mix and well you got yourself one damm fine piece of work. It’s a story about Shaun, ( played by Simon Pegg ) a man living a mundane life in a dead end job while trying to win back his girlfriend, and deal with a town full of zombies.

#1 Night Of The Living Dead (1968)

Now my personal favourite. George A. Romero's 1968 masterpiece. With only a $114,000 budget this zombie movie is not only a cult classic, but a cultural phenomenon that depicts and critics the underlying social problems of the Vietnam era. It's spirit was lost however in its two remakes one in 1990 and a 3D version in 2006, to truly appreciate this movie stick with original black and white version.

Cool hub, but I'm honestly surprised "Return of the Living Dead" didn't make the cut.

I'd also recommend Braindead/Dead Alive if you want some cheesy over-the-top gore (AND it's directed by Peter Jackson!)

I also enjoyed both Land of and Diary of the Dead but then you'd just have a complete Romero list...
