This Hub seeks to outline and debunk many of the lies about political Liberalism. This is not really about financial or fiscal Liberalism, though those ideals make an oblique appearance.

I'm a Liberal. Always have been. Herein lies some of the beliefs of traditional Liberalism, and positions of traditional Liberals.

At the core of these beliefs is that education is only thing required to restrain a man in society. That an educated person has the ability to make better decisions than one without education. Crime statistics, wage statistics, and virtually every other method of measuring success back this up.

Don't listen to Demagogues, don't let the false tears of fools manipulate you, don't even listen to me, research for yourself. Educate yourself and be free.

  1. Liberals want to take away your Freedom.

    The United States of America was the first modern Liberal Democracy, ever. The words and ideals of John Locke, the Father of Modern Liberalism ("...no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions."), are echoed in the Declaration of independence:

    "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

    These freedoms, the LIBERties, are codified in the Bill of Rights and are the basis of the freedoms enjoyed by all free men.

    The word "Liberal" (and "Liberty") comes form the Latin liberalis: <liber: free, alis: all> and translates: "of freedom," "befitting the free," or "suitable for a free man" as context dictates and can be defined as "tending in favor of freedom and democracy."

    It was considered a reproach bordering on an accusation of treason by those loyal to various European monarchs during the 16th and 17th centuries.

    The very word "Liberal" is synonymous with Freedom.

  2. Liberals hate God.

    This has been used as a smear tactic a far back as the election of our third president, Thomas Jefferson. During the 1800 election, the New England Palladium wrote, "Should the infidel Jefferson be elected to the Presidency, the seal of death is that moment set on our holy religion, our churches will be prostrated, and some infamous prostitute, under the title of goddess of reason, will preside in the sanctuaries now devoted to the worship of the most High."

    Jefferson was not an Orthodox Christian. As a Deist, he acknowledged the existence of the Creator, but not the divinity of Christ, nor any miracle or supernatural event laid out in the Bible. He went so far as to rewrite the four Gospels (Mark, Mathew, Luke, and John--aka the Jefferson Bible), removing all references to the supernatural, to include the Virgin Birth, the raising of Lazarus from the Dead, and the Resurrection.

    Regardless, most Liberals, like most people in the US, consider themselves Christians.

  3. Liberals have a "Homosexual Agenda."

    Liberals believe that "...no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions," and that "...all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Liberals do not tend quibble over the meaning of "all men," "unalienable Rights," nor of "Happiness". We see that the Founders realized that the list of "unalienable Rights" was not a complete list (hence the words "among these"), therefore; we see amendments like the Fourteenth, which guarantees equal protection under the law, to mean equal for everyone--regardless of race, gender, sexual preference, etc. So long as they do not directly harm another or harm them through negligence or other legal theorem acceptable to the People, they should suffer no harm themselves and qualify for the same rights as others.

  4. Liberals are pro-Communist.

    This one is baffling.

    From Truman's Korean War, to JFK's coups in South and Central America (including trying to invade Cuba), to the Cuban Missile Crisis, to Johnson ramping up against the Commies in Vietnam, Liberals have fought Communism with more tenacity than any Republican. Jimmy Carter deterred the Red Menace in submarines during the late 1940s and the early 1950s. Al Gore was in Vietnam as an enlisted man, John Kerry as an Officer. John Kerry has killed more Communists than all the members of Bushes' entire Cabinet combined.

    I think I've proven the point.

  5. Liberals are anti-military or soft on defense.

    Liberal Democrats (Truman, LBJ, JFK, Carter, Kerry were officers, while Gore, Dukakis, and Mondale all served as enlisted).

    Truman Enlisted as a Private, served as a Captain in WWI, and retired a Colonel.

    LBJ won the Silver Star for Gallantry during WWII.

    JFK's awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, received after sustaining injuries to his back, then swimming with the life jacket strap of badly-burned crewman clenched in his teeth. He towed the wounded man to an island and later to a second island from where his crew was subsequently rescued after the Japanese sunk the famous PT-109. He also received the Purple Heart for these actions.

    John Kerry received three Purple Hearts, and both a Bronze Star and Silver Star for Gallantry during his service in Vietnam.

    Regarding his experiences as an Enlisted man during the Vietnam War, Al Gore notes: "I don't pretend that my own military experience matches in any way what others here have been through [...] I didn't do the most, or run the gravest danger. But I was proud to wear my country's uniform. And my own experiences gave me strong beliefs about America's obligation to keep our national defenses strong."

    Liberals know that a strong national defense is not tied as to a huge defense budget, but to the men and women serving in our Armed Forces. Liberals want funds to provide for body armor to troops, raise their salaries, and increase their benefits--not line the pockets of war profiteers.

  6. Liberals are pro-Nazi.

    Again, this is baffling.

    Fascism is on the Far-FAR right of the political spectrum, not the left, and has more in common, politically, with monarchies and other forms of despotism than a Liberal Democracy.

    JFK almost died fighting the Axis when his PT was sunk while LBJ won a Silver Star.

    FDR and "Give 'em Hell Harry" Truman fought and beat the Axis while the likes of Prescott Bush (George HW Bush's Father) and George Herbert Walker (Prescott's father-in-law) had assets seized under the "Trading with the enemy Act " for financing the Nazis, as follows:

    1942 : Union Banking Corporation (Prescott Bush was the Director of UBC).

    Holland-American Trading Corporation (Nazi front run by UBC)

    Seamless Steel Equipment Corporation (Nazi front run by UBC)

    Silesian-American Corporation, (UBC asset directly managed by Prescott Bush and George Walker)

    And others.

    The US Congress determined that (prior to the 1942), companies owned, operated, or associated with Bush and Walker's operations provided:

    50.8% of Nazi Germany's pig iron
    41.4% of Nazi Germany's universal plate
    36.0% of Nazi Germany's heavy plate
    38.5% of Nazi Germany's galvanized sheet
    45.5% of Nazi Germany's pipes and tubes
    22.1% of Nazi Germany's wire
    35.0% of Nazi Germany's explosives.

    They also supplied Mussolini with financing and materials from the late1920s forward.

  7. Liberals are soft on crime.

    No one is "soft on crime," and the idea is preposterous. However, Liberals believe that accusation does not imply guilt and that no innocent man should ever be imprisoned. That though rare, law enforcement has, with malice and intent, framed US Citizens for crimes as weighty as murder (Elmer Pratt, et al.). That because almost one percent of our population is in Jail or Prison on a given day, that the legal system must be reformed. That reforming a criminal is more valuable to society than imprisoning them. That a crime, in which one cannot show a direct victim, should not be a crime. That the rights of the accused must be secured if we are to live without fear of false imprisonment by our own government.

  8. Liberals want the Terrorists to win.

    To quote an outspoken Liberal, one Patrick Henry:

    "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!"

    That Liberals would be in league with Islamic terrorists is ridiculous, but we would rather die than be forced to give up Liberty, because, to paraphrase Henry: Freedom is more precious than a life without it. One does not fight tyranny by sacrificing Liberty.

  9. Liberals are financially irresponsible.

    Under twelve years of Reagan and Bush (41), the national deficit increased more than it have the first thirty-nine presidents combined. Under Clinton, the deficit shrank considerably, and was on target to be eliminated by 2012 in 2000. Bush (43) was elected and the surplus was gone in less than one year. In eight years of Bush (43), not only was the surplus of the Clinton years wiped away, but the government acquired more debt in eight years that it under all 42 other presidents combined. That's not responsible, fiscal or otherwise, that is financial suicide.

  10. Liberals are un-American.

    America was founded on the Principles of Liberalism by Liberals. Liberals serve in the military, march in protest, and wish nothing more than to be free.

What part of that is un-American?

I started out to write a lengthy response to this hub and then realized that there was really no point in doing so.

We are so much in agreement that any difference of expression is so minute as to be unworthy of discussion.

You obviously possess much knowledge and are very proficient at relating it to others who are interested in its acquisition.

A knowledgeable, well informed public is one of the most important prerequisites of a civil society.

However, it's a sad fact that a great many people prefer to accept authority as the truth rather than the truth as the authority.

I regret I don't spend much time visiting here or writing hubs these days but I am happy to have found your work.

Prepare yourself for a plethora of willfully ignorant responses but, please, keep writing.

Spreading truth and raising awareness is vital today.

CWB- I've read your hubs as well, and we are often of a like mind.

I agree that knowledgeable, well-informed public is one of the most important prerequisites of a civil society, but also that the opposite is true. The farce of punditry certainly doesn't help much, in that regard.
