Wow. I love looking at the list, but as always, wonder at some of the rankings. How did "I want it that way" by Backstreet Boys beat out some of those in the lower 50's? They must have done it by radio plays or something. Oh well, at least Britney can be proud she got in the top 10.

Awesome hub! I missed it on TV, but reading through the list definitely brought back some memories. It's just funny when you read through it that there are songs like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Loser" (two of my all-time favorites) on the same list as MMMBop and Ice Ice Baby. LOL. It's a diverse list :)

this list sucks. VH1 sucks. these guys promote awful music. backstreet boys on 3rd place. I think it shows how bad the list and the people in VH1 are.

Josie  says:

This list was a load of rubbish and proof that MTV and VH1 just ruins what is good about music. How did Nsnyc beat Radiohead?? Where's Pulp, Blur, The La's, Stone Roses, Placebo ETC? Why is wonderwall so far up the list and don't look back in anger not even on there for Oasis??This list is utter shite. Fact. Only about 5 of the songs on it deserve to be on the list. This compliation is so shameful, the 90's was an excellent decade for music, on of the best and yet some idiots who apparently know so much about 'great' music comes up with this. I mean backstreet boys THIRD?? They were CRAP, their songs were for 8 year olds. How anyone can think this legitimate or correct is beyond me.

How do you have a list of VH1's 100 greatest songs of the 90s and do not include a group like Boyz II Men, but you put En Vogue on there. End of the Road, I'll Make to You, or Motownphilly. This list is flawed. That's such an insult.

thaddeus  says:

SMASHING PUMPKINS anyone? Come on. The bigest and best band of the era couldn't land with "1979", "Mayonnaise", or "Disarm". And no Boyz II Men is a damn shame too. This list is a grave error.

shanaloho  says:

I still can't believe that Savage Garden's "Truly Madly Deeply" didn't make the list. Not only should it have been included, but it would have made my top 20. That song is quintessential 90's! And no "Crash" by DMB?

the thing about an online poll seems a little hard to believe to me... It weird songs like Living La Vida Loca> and Wonderwall were ranked so low on the list, while it's surprising that many forgotten artists like C+C music factory, Snow or some good but not so famous artists like Liz Phair, Dunkan Sheik or Marcy's playground did appear in a list that doesn't feature any Smashing Pumpkins, Blind Melon, Foo fighters, STP, NIN, Dave Mathews Band, Blur, RATM, Offspring other things to mention about the list: 1.-they ranked "Time of your life" by Green day but they didn't rank "Basket Case" which is a much bigger hit2.-No songs by the Smashing Pumpkins, Foo fighters, STP, NIN, Dave Mathews Band were ranked3.-"You oughtta know" is my favourite Alanis M. song, but i thought "Ironic" was a much bigger hit. wasn't it?4.- What happend to songs like "Runaway Train" or "Plush" or "No Rain" "Song 2" or "prett Fly for a white guy?? ?? all of them were big?? weren't they?

kipare  says:

Rage against the machine? Shmashing Pumpkins? The offspring? cmon VH1!. . . .and why was "I alone" by Live on there and not "Lighning crashes" which if i can recall was a massive hit

Craig  says:

Better list than that ridiculous 80s list. Houston doesn't belong here, certainly not above "Nothing Compares 2 U," which truly is one of the 10 best. Actually 1/2 of the Top 10 is legit, I'm not sure there was anything in the Top 10 on the 80s aside from "When Doves Cry" and "Bille Jean" that was even decent.

Obviously Celine, Mariah and VAnilla don't belong here either but at least a lot of these are indeed great.

ryan  says:

Mariah Carey should have had at least 5 songs in there.

Always Be My Baby, Vision of Love, Emotions, Fantasy, One Sweet Day

Janet Jackson should have had 2 songs in there

Scream (With Michael Jackson), Thats the way Love goes

And I Will Always Love You should have been number one.

some great songs listed here!! some fantastic memories of my childhood too, especially songs like 'Wonderwall' and 'Smells like Teen Spirit'. I think Backstreet Boys do deserve a place in the list, but with 'Backstreets Back' instead- what a tune!! Also, what about all the classic 90's dance tracks like 'No Limits' by 2Unlimited? Or 'Set you Free' by NTrance?

Ah nostalgia

umm i do believe "closing time" by semisonic should be top 40, let alone not even on the list! wonderwall deserves better than 35 say 10-20 range, sublime should be represented, and they give too much slack to crap bands that were on the radio. And even if it is the most annoying song of the 90's, Smash Mouths "All Star" should be on the list

musicman78  says:

Okay wait, I didn't read all the comments but I did notice people complaining that certain songs didn't make it on the list but "they were top songs back then," or "this song wasn't at (whatever position) back then." You have to remember, people WENT ONLINE and VOTED for their favorite songs and whoever got whatever percentage of votes was put in that position. VH1 did nothing except calculate the list and air it.

The people that commented are all ruh-tards (watch the hangover). Most of the comments go thusly, "wtf, where's <insert random song name>, etc." If they bothered to scroll up and down they would see there is barely any consistency in the songs that were supposedly left out. And theres like hundreds of songs to choose from. Did they stop to think the list can only be so long? Yeah some songs will get left out. The only thing that got left out with with any aggreable between post consistency was the verve's bittersweet symphony. Wow you turds agree on one song that got left out. One dude even said a song got left out that was ON THE FREAKING LIST. Please stop and think before you post your inane comments and do me a favor and stfu anyway just in case.

bloop  says:

Yes, I have a definite problem with Smashing Pumpkins not even making this list. And Everlong also deserved to reach the list, and the patronising "at least it made #104" token clip was very undeserved. Time of Your Life is most definitely, in my opinion, a way better Green Day hit, but I assume people agreed with me, which is why Basket Case didn't make the cut? I also assume they preferred not to have more than one song by an artist on the list, because I would definitely have put Come as You Are and Rape Me on that list, to add to the Nirvana. The complete lack of the Offspring hits also irked me, as did the fact that an awesome song like Iris was beaten by Christina Aguilera. In a song that wanted you to "rub her the right way". Moreover, the fact that Guns N Roses, Nine Inch Nails, Aerosmith, Marilyn Manson, Placebo, Limp Bizkit, Incubus, etc didn't appear on the list makes me feel that they picked some Rock favourites, then totally ignored others of the genre.

And also-No Bjork. It's Oh So Quiet? Whaaat?

Finally: Sweet Dreams-Eurythmics. HOW DID THAT NOT MAKE IT ONTO THIS LIST?????

Whether it's VH1 or the voters who picked the songs isn't the problem. It's the total lack of representation this list provides. But who am I to say anything? I'm discovering these bands now, being about 6 when the nineties ended. And I can see a problem.

-sigh- I still would have liked to see "Interstate Love Song", "Plush" or "Trippin' On a Hole in a Paper Heart" on here, though! And "Closer", "Only" or "Head Like a Hole"... still good though.

PEOPLE!! STOP BLAMING VH1 FOR THIS LIST! Vh1 put up 1000s of 90s songs up on there website and let the people of the public vote on the songs. So stop blaming vh1 and blame yourself for the list! And why bring MTV into the picture? That isnt even related you morons!! However, i do believe there is some faulties. Wonderwall needs top 10 material, and backstreet boys need to get into the 85-100 chunk of the list. However, i think the public got it right when they put smells like teen spirit as #1. I mean, come on. Nirvana is the king of 90s music. And, it put Washington (my home state) on the map. Seattle is the kingdom for grunge. Here are some songs that i think need to be on the list:

"Basket Case" - Green Day

"Song 2" - Blur

"Bittersweet Symphony" - The Verve

"Rump Shaker" - Wreckx-N-Effect

"I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" - Aerosmith

"Say It Ain't So" - Weezer

"All The Small Things" - Blink-182

"Lithium" - Nirvana

Any song from Boys II Men, and some Guns 'N' Roses.

Other than that, this list is ok.

I don't get why some many people are like "BackStreetBoys are number 3?!?!!? OMGWTFFF". Okay. Whether you liked them or not, they were insanely popular in the 90's. Many of their songs got so much airtime it's ridiculous. There are still fairly popular today, their last tour was sold-out.

It makes sense that they are #3 based on sheer popularity at the time and play time in the 90's.

I'm shocked Prozzak didn't make the list. They were so freaking popular in the 90s.

Glad to see Nirvana at number 1. There are so many songs I wished would've made the list... didn't even hear about the movie. Oh well. VH1/MTV/MuchMusic suck ass anyways.

I realize this list was a popular vote, but come on people?

BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY - THE VERVE

If the Verve had had it their way, they wouldn't have wanted the mainstream popularity that this song got.

But since the greedy Rolling Stone lawyers took the rights to the song, they spread the song around everywhere. It was on commercials and in movies and frickin' everywhere. People heard this song, they knew damn well it was an amazing song, but refused to vote for it.

This should show you the sad, sad state of music in America.

okay, i am really sick of everybody trashing the backstreet boys. their songs are fun, they have almost no meaning, but their fun to sing aloung to and to dance to. so stop trashing them for being in third place, everybody secretly enjoys the music. and this list rocked have most of the songs! (;

I just wanted to say my twelve year old brother could have put the top 100 90's songs together better than VH1 veiwers. The problem is only a few people actually logged on to their website to vote for the top songs... these people were completely mistaken in their accuracy of good music. First of all so many great bands are missing and a lot of the good ones on there should have been a lottttt higher. VH1 should have seen the results to the top 100 votes and decided that people are not capable of voting properly and made their own lists based on factual evidence and which songs were in fact awesome. Come on, you know a bunch of teens made the backstreet boys so high. Look at cd's they sell in stores of good 90's music, you don't see the backstreet boys because they were just a teen fantasy of a hot body and semi-okay songs. Nothing more. I vote VH1 makes their own list and the veiwers can suck it up and accept their precious boy band fantasy did not make good music. Yes they were popular... but to get the #3 spot???? Sickining. In no way shape or form do they deserve to be higher than half the people on that list.

This is a great list and as one of the "older" viewers who can actually remember the 90's all the way through, I think it's a great list (with the exception of missing Boyz II Men).

I just find it funny that so many people are commenting on the list that "insert singer/song here" should have been on the list, yet I doubt any of you voted for the top 100 songs. Also, the same people look like fools when they can't even spell correctly. I take this list more seriously than half the comments on this page.

P.S. - For those of you that are complaining about the Backstreet Boys and Britney spears being on the list, you know that you're the same people who were begging your parents to take you to those concerts 10 years ago and rushing home from school just so you can see who was #1 on TRL so stop complaining when you know you supported them. It's not all about rock, rap, and/or alternative music. Grow up!

Folks, this isn't the 100 greatest songs of the 90's list.

And there's still no Red Hot Chili Peppers, No Tupac, and no Boyz II Men. This list is off.

oh shut the fuck up all the backstreet boys' haters. just because you dont like them doesn't mean that they "don't deserve" to be in this list. they were insanely popular in the 90s, being the most successful band of all times and hell yeah, it's because they make GOOD music. i'm not saying that others don't, but get out, they DO deserve the #3 position

koco  says:

and added to that, have you ever really listened to Backstreet Boys' songs, or you just "oh damn, another gay band..." and skip them? you guys want your fav to be on the list, but don't be like kids to deny how well others have done. you people disgust me

This list blows. No Sublime, really? They could have easily replaced all the crap pop with more grunge and angry chick music. That (along with the hiphop, though I agree Crossroads by Bone Thugs deserved to be on that list) really encapsulated the 90's. Though the Britney Spears, N*Suck came out late 90's, the pop craze was really the dawn of the 2000's.

Disappointing...

Although where the hell is Stone Temple Pilots?

Interstate Love Song, Plush, Big Empty all capable of being in the top 50!

November Rain by GNR, Cherub Rock by Smashing Pumpkins, alot more grunge and less pop.
