The history of pop music has seen a whole lot of different topics for its hit tunes. Mostly they deal with love, found love, lost love, forbidden love, teen love, and the rest of all that love stuff. There's even a category for sub-teen love: Songs which were released in an earlier and more innocent age but today read like pedophile instruction manuals:

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl,
You're much too young, girl

Gary Puckett - Young Girl

I can see that you're fifteen years old
No I don't want your I.D.
You look so restless and you're so far from home
But it's no hanging matter
Its no capital crime

The Rolling Stones - Stray Cat Blues

She's just sixteen years old
Leave her alone, they say
Separated by fools
Who don't know what love is yet
But I want you to know

Benny Mardones - Into The Night

There are more than enough songs about women who don't have a partner at all and decide to just masturbate:

Bjork - All Is Full Of Love
Cyndi Lauper - She Bop
Divinyls - I Touch Myself
Janet Jackson - If
Pink - Sober
The Pussycat Dolls - I Don't Need A Man
Tory Amos - Icicle
Tweet - Oops

... and many more.

Of course, we can always rely on Britney to sing the definitive songs on many sexual subjects, including female masturbation:

Imagination’s taking over
Another day without a lover
The more I come to understand
The touch of my hand

Britney Spears - Touch Of My Hand

Glad you wanna touch down there, Brit, as no one else I know does. However, popular songs don't have to all center around sexuality, as there are countless other topics. Frank Zappa wrote songs about:

Beer shampoo
Billy The Mountain's trip to Las Vegas
Boogers
Botulism
Burnt Weenie sandwiches
Canada Customs
Cruising for burgers
Dead girls in London
Dental hygiene
Dog breath
Eating urine soaked snow
Enema bandits in Illinois
Hot poop
Jewish princesses
Kangaroos
Lumpy gravy
Magdalena's incest with her Canadian daddy
Mudsharks
Pancake breakfasts
Penguins in bondage
Penis dimension
Redneck eats
Stinky feet
Teenage wind
The Peace Corps
Weasels ripping flesh

and of course, Valley Girls.

And he was always stone cold sober! Hard to believe, huh?

However, there are an inordinate number of hit pop songs that deal with death. So many of them, and mostly utterly repugnant, that to dissect each one would be a crime against life. Entire volumes of abnormal psychology could be written about Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear The Reaper, especially the line about redefining happiness. So we'll redefine happiness by being dead? Doesn't that strike you as a bit too extreme a redefinition?

Therefore, without further ado, I will end this die-a-tribe and place a mort-atorium on it before it gets too grave as I have to urn my keep around here of corpse, as it's tomb much for me and I have to call my mummy before I blow a casket.

Here are the ten worst death lyrics of all time:

Worst Lyrics Of All Time - #91

Gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
That's where you're gonna go when you die
When you die and they lay you to rest
You're gonna go to the place that's the best

Norman Greenbaum - Spirit In The Sky

Worst Lyrics Of All Time - #92

I was proud and satisfied, life had so much to give
Till the day they told me that she didn't have long to live
She said Rocky I never had to die before don't know if I can do it

Dickey Lee - Rocky

Worst Lyrics Of All Time - #93

I couldn't stop so I swerved to the right
I'll never forget the sound that night
The screaming tires the busting glass
The painful scream that I heard last
She's gone to heaven so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world

J. Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers - Last Kiss

Worst Lyrics Of All Time - #94

Valentine is done
Here but now they're gone
Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity
Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday
Like Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday
Redefine happiness
Another 40,000 coming everyday
We can be like they are
Come on baby
Don't fear the reaper

Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear The Reaper

Worst Lyrics Of All Time - #95

You thought you might be a ghost
You thought you might be a ghost
You didn't get to heaven, but you made it close
You didn't get to heaven, but you ohh ohhh
Those who are dead are not dead
They're just living in my head, ooh

Coldplay - 42

Worst Lyrics Of All Time - #96

Here I go, hah
Hey Hey
Here comes the devil
Right Behind
Look out children
Here he comes
Here he comes!
Hey
Don't want to go by the devil
Don't want to go by demon
Don't want to go by Satan
Don't want to die uneasy

Blood, Sweat & Tears - And When I Die

Worst Lyrics Of All Time - #97

She took her life
Within her hands
She took her life
Within her own two hands
And no-one can tell her
What to do now
And I believed in you
I believed in you
Like Elvis Presley
Singin' live from Las Vegas
Where did you go?
Well she’s gone to meet
Her maker
Back to where she came from
Come to save her soul

Eurythmics - Angel

Worst Lyrics Of All Time - #98

And I know you're shining down on me from Heaven
Like so many friends we've lost along the way
And I know eventually we'll be together
One sweet day
Picture a little scene from Heaven
Although, the sun will never shine the same
I'll always look to a brighter day
Yeah, Lord, I know, when I lay me down to sleep
You'll always listen, as I pray

Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men - One Sweet Day

Worst Lyrics Of All Time - #99

When the wind cries out my name
And time has come for me to die
Then wrap me in my cape
And lay my sword down at my side
Then place me on a ship of oak
And let it drift with tide
Let the flames purify my soul
On its way to hall up high

Bathory - Shores In Flames

Worst Lyrics Of All Time - #100

Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers everywhere
I wish that we could both be there
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun

Pat says - haven't read any of your Bad Lyrics 1 to 90 (yet), but this one made me laugh. It also made me cringe because I know so many of these songs. I had years of driving back and forth to work with the radio on. Now I have the radio on at home.

Isn't there one called something like 'Leader of the Pack' that includes the sound of a motorcycle engine revving - and then a crash??? If I remember right that was one of the more tasteless ones about death. Hang on - what am I saying - that sounds as if there were some tasteful songs about death!

Didn't the girl die in that Blue Velvet song? I think it was popular in the 1960s when i was actually of singles buying age.....

The Shangri-Las' Leader Of The Pack is definitely a candidate for inclusion. From "I met him at the candy store" (yeah, you meet the head of the Hell's Angels over lollipops...) to the sheer idiocy of:

"As he drove away on that rainy night

I begged him to go slow

But whether he heard, I'll never know

Look out! Look out! Look out! Look out!"

It definitely deserves an honorable mention!

The girl in Bobby Vinton's Blue Velvet doesn't die, but just dumps him. However, another Bobby, this one Goldsboro, has one of the worst death songs ever in Honey and that one really does belong in the list as well:

"And honey, I miss you

And I'm bein' good

And I'd love to be with you

If only I could

One day while I was not at home

While she was there and all alone

The angels came"

I think I'm going to puke... :)
