Top 20 Most Commonly Misspelled Words
62
Thanks to the modern technology such as text messaging, chat messaging, and emails, the number of misspelled words are on the rise. Soon the misspelled words will become a common vocabulary in English language.
A poll conducted by OnePoll.com, a market research company, found “definitely” as the most commonly misspelled word in United Kingdom.
5,000 people took part in this study. Even though many spelled the words wrongly, they considered those who can’t spell correctly are bad.
Other commonly misspelled words were “sacrilegious”, “indict”, “Bureaucracy”, “broccoli” and others.
Some are blaming “spell-check” and “auto-correction” is the culprits for their spelling the words wrong. Others are blaming “text-messaging” and “text speak” (LOL, thx, etc.).
A spokesperson for OnePoll.com told Telegraph:
“It’s clear the role technology is having on our lives is contributing to the downfall of our ability to spell…Computers and mobile phones which spell words for us has left us with a lazy attitude towards spelling.”

I think correct spelling is important, cgull8m, but too many people don't care whether they spell a word correctly. As a longtime reporter and editor, I make every effort to spell correctly. If I have any doubt I consult a dictionary (although I confess I now use dictionary.com, not Webster's. Even then I sometimes err, but I feel disappointed when I find any error on my pages. Many words almost require that they be checked in a dictionary (I would never rely on spellcheck, although it can be useful as a preliminary check.) Sometimes people use shortcuts, such as when using the word "victuals." It's actually pronounced "vittles" and some people spell it that way.
