Top 20 Modern Movie Endings
Sorry Casablanca and Citizen Kane fans, but as I have never seen many of the classics I thought it would be unfair to try to include them on my list. This list is all modern films and some darker films but all great high quality films. WARNING to read on or to watch will definitely spoil the movie, if you are interested in watching these movies (which I highly suggest if you've never seen) then you probably should not watch the videos that are not trailers.
With that being said here are my top 20 Endings and some videos to complement them if they were available:
- #20 Shawshank Redemption
- #19 Children of Men
- #18 United 93
- #17 Primal Fear
- #16 Scarface
Primal Fear made my list because of the great acting of Edward Norton and a good job by Gere. Definitely not an ending I was expecting. For me United 93 was the best movie made capturing the whole effect of 9/11, not just the tragedy but also that a handful of ordinary people can do an extra-ordinary things. Children of Men is a relatively unknown movie but a great flick of a dark polluted future for our world. Scarface of course is loved by many for Tony Montana's famous The World Is Mine exit. Shawshank is another good solid movie with a good solid ending. Please feel free to watch the endings below but I do warn you again, it will spoil the movies for you if you have not seen them yet and some of these movies are modern classics.

- #15 The Butterfly Effect Director's Cut
- #14 Pi
- #13 12 Monkeys
- #12 The Prestige
- #11 American Beauty
Are you watching closely? I have to say The Prestige's ending is so great that it is still debated online what exactly was going on. Pi and Butterfly Effect are definitely a little darker and twisted and probably won't be everyone's cup of tea but both are powerful movies. 12 Monkeys is another strange movie, actually a remake of La Jetee (1962) but is another great movie with another great ending. And American Beauty despite some strange moments, is another modern classic where Spacey has an extremely memorable role.

Leon - The Professional (Uncut International Version)
Price: $17.99
List Price: $29.95 |
|
The Machinist
Price: $6.94
List Price: $14.98 |
- Million Dollar Baby
- The Professional (International Version)
- The Machinist
- Brick
- American History X
Brick is one of the most interesting films I have ever seen. The setting is a very different high school than I remember but the movie is actually metered off Shakespeare and sounds a little strange but once you get used to it, this 'poem' is actually a great movie. The Machinist is another great movie that is relatively unknown, basically Christian Bale is an industrial worker who has unable to sleep for a year and now thinks he is going insane amongst other problems. Million Dollar Baby is another great movie people have most likely seen or heard about. American History X is a great movie that gives us a great view into the world of white vs. black problems which still plagues us today. And finally, The Professional (Jean Reno & Gary Oldman) is a movie you must watch again if you have only seen the American version. The movie seems twice as long but many of the deleted scenes are action scenes so you won't be bored.

The Usual Suspects (Special Editon)

Memento
Price: $6.86
List Price: $14.94 |

The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Giftset DVD
Price: $25.99
List Price: $59.97 |
- #5 Seven
- #4 The Godfather Trilogy
- #3 Memento
- #2 The Sixth Sense
- #1 The Usual Suspects
Seven's ending was as chilling and cold as that entire great movie. Freeman and Pitt and Spacey are all classic in Seven (Spacey seems to hit this list a lot despite him not being a favorite actor of mine). The Godfather's are definitely historic with GF II being the best of the three. Puzo/Coppola have created a classic that will never lose popularity. Memento is probably the greatest movie you have never seen. Memento is Christopher Nolan's masterpiece (Batman Begins, The Prestige) and despite a hard to follow story it is a must see, possibly a double must see as if you aren't paying close attention a second viewing might be needed. The Sixth Sense twist ending put M. Night Shyamalan's name on the map (Signs, Unbreakable, The Village) and is an unforgettable movie. But Spacey again shows up in the movie ending of all endings. The Usual Suspects had such a great ending I don't think it will ever be surpassed. Kaiser Soze reigns supreme on my list.
