Anyone who is an avid reader can tell you how valuable a good book is. Books that you decide to keep in a collection, or books that you can read over and over are sometimes hard to find. Science Fiction has always been one of my favorite genres for reading, and so here are the Top 5 Bestsellers on Amazon Books.

The Road (Oprah's Book Club) The Road (Oprah's Book Club)
Price: $5.98
List Price: $14.95

#1 - The Road by Cormac McCarthy

This book is in Oprah's Book Club, and received a 4-star rating on Amazon.

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where animals are extinct, and cannibals roam the earth. The story is based around an unnamed man and his young son, whose wife commited suicide shortly after giving birth. In this horrific landscape father and son endure a trek towards the sea. This looks to be a very emotionally charged book, that is worth picking up!

Fahrenheit 451 Fahrenheit 451
Price: $3.00
List Price: $6.99

#2 - Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Anyone who is a fan of science fiction should be familiar with this author! One of his more popular titles is Fahrenheit 451.

This book was first published in 1953, and is a classic science fiction novel. The book takes place in a future where technology based on wall-sized televisions and radio pumped straight into your ear have replaced books. Not only do the people not care to read anymore, they l burn books in public! The story revolves around one of these book burners, who realizes the severity of what their society is doing. Even after 50 years, this book gives a chilling view into an extremely censored society, not much unlike some of those in the past; and close to some that currently exist.

Replay Replay
Price: $6.80
List Price: $13.95

#3 - Replay by Ken Grimwood

The sci-fi version of Groundhog's Day? Not really. This book is based around Jeff, who dies near the beginning of the book. He is then forced back into time, into his 16-year old body in 1963. He retains his memories up until his time of death, and goes on to relive many mistakes he made in his future life. But the real story begins when Jeff meets another re-lifer named Pamela...

Slaughterhouse-Five: A Novel Slaughterhouse-Five: A Novel
Price: $6.42
List Price: $15.00

#4 - Slaughterhouse-five by Kurt Vonnegut

This book follows the character named Billy Pilgrim, who belives he was abducted by timeless aliens. They live past, present and future all at the same time- and Billy begins to do this as well. Billy travels to the time of his marriage, but mostly Billy returns to the time he was held as a prisoner during the Dresden fire-bombings. The book blends science fiction and realism together flawlessly because of Vonnegut's own experience as an American Prisoner of War during the Dresden fire-bombings.

1984 (Signet Classics) 1984 (Signet Classics)
Price: $1.95
List Price: $9.99

#5 - 1984 by George Orwell

This book is based in Orwell's version of 1984 London. In his vision of the world, the Russian-Solviet powers are controlling things. Many privacies are no longer, "Big Brother" watches you eat, sleep, have sex, etc... In his book, the main character is a man named Winston Smith. The book predicts many things which we ignore in our present world such as X-Ray scanners at airport terminals, cameras watching public streets and telephone lines being monitored in every country without the public's knowledge. Many of the reviews say "You MUST read this book!"

Most of these books I have not read. But they are classics which I am going to pickup after writing this article. It is still amazing to me that many of the concepts that I read in earlier science fiction (pre-1990's) are now becoming reality. I have a great respect for people who can think outside the box and create something astonishing and new for their readers. I encourage everyone to go out, and pickup one of these books!

Hi Sooz,

Thanks for the list. I'm putting Ken Grimwood's "Replay" on top of my must read list.

I'm an avid reader of Sci-Fi too and can relate to your feelings about yesterday's concepts becoming realities today.

Have you read David Brin? I would like to recommend "Startide Rising", never experienced so many concepts in one single book.

Hi Bird,

I haven't read him, but I will pick it up next time. I usually grab 10 or 15 new/used books at a time then read them :)
