When you think of romantic comedies, stars like Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, and Hugh Grant probably come to mind. They’re often formulaic (boy-meets-girl, they fall in love, they break up, then boy makes a grand gesture before they live happily ever after, all in a nice and neat 90 minutes or less), but well-made romcoms can be quite enjoyable for more than just the sappy-hearted. Some on this list are down-right hilarious.

Romantic comedies may not earn as much cash at the box office as summer blockbusters (nor do they cost as much), but with the right combination of bright-toothed movie stars and the right marketing strategy—like opening on Valentine’s weekend—some of these movies have banked serious green. Here’s the list of the top five grossing romantic comedies.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding had a slow start after its release on April 19, 2002, before going on to dominate the romantic comedy category.  This little independent movie made less than $600,000 opening weekend, but persevered to gross over $241 million.  It was also nominated for an Academy Award for the 2003 Best Original Screenplay.

What Women Want was released in theaters on December 15, 2000, and quickly earned over $33 million its opening weekend.   The film eventually grossed more than $182 million.  Mel Gibson took a break from action movies like Lethal Weapon and The Patriot to star as Nick Marshall, the man who hears women’s thoughts.  Not a bad decision, since it led to a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal.

Hitch opened on February 11, 2005 and the combination of Valentine’s Day and Will Smith proved to be quite the force, as they garnered over $43 million for the weekend.  Will Smith’s tryst in the romantic comedy genre proved fruitful, as the movie topped $179 million total.  It was nominated for nine Teen Choice Awards, with Will Smith winning one.

Some say that Pretty Woman made Julia Roberts America’s Sweetheart after its March 23, 1990 release.  It earned over $11 million its opening weekend, and more than $178 million total.   The role of Vivian Ward earned Julia Roberts her second Best Actress Oscar nomination.  Who knew playing a hooker with a heart would be so lucrative?

The Farrelly Brothers, the writer/directors of Dumb and Dumber, switched gears a little to create the twisted love story featuring the most famous “hair gel” scene of all time.  There’s Something About Mary opened on July 15, 1998 and earned over $13 million in its first weekend.  Not only did the movie make more than $176 million, but it also earned Golden Globe nominations for Best Comedy and Best Actress for Cameron Diaz.
