Top 5 Reasons You May Need a Home Improvement Professional
71Home Renovation Follies From Building Inspectors
With the huge boom of big box Do-It-Yourself shops sprouting up all over, more people are taking on home renovation tasks on their own.
Nothing wrong with that, but sometimes we need to put down the pneumatic drill and ask, "Do I really feel like I know what I'm doing here, or should I call in a home improvement professional"
English posts that contain Home Renovation per day for the last 30 days.
5] This is some crawlspace handy work performed by a homeowner. Not only does he not own a level; they were also genius enough to use an overturned metal bracket for their structural support.
4] The inspector spent quite some time trying to find the main electrical panel. After spending a good portion of time on his quest, he was shocked to find the panel behind a mirror other the bathroom sink. Home owners take note, "Electrical panels are never to be in a bathroom, as per ICC code" This Old House
3] Here we go back underneath the house again. The homeowner used a Joyce car jack to hold up their home. This I wrong on so many levels, I don't think you need a detailed description as to why this is a problem...or do you?
2] I would love to be a fly on the wall when the result of this renovation goes wrong. To achieve the "high end look" that comes with a sunken tub, the homeowner drilled holes ¾″ from the bottom of the floor joists and suspended the tub with braided cable.
Water [8lbs\gallon] + Average Adult Weight = 1 night of spectacular television.
1] Grade school physics people - metal is an excellent conductor of electricity. And what do we have here? A receptacle that is mounted [electrical taped] to a steel support post in the basement of a home sans the receptacle box, with exposed wires. Nice.

How long has the tub been like that? The wing nut thingies (thats the scientific term :)) are rusted. Man, that would make a great scene in a comedy! A nice, relaxing bubble bath....candles, music. Then a creaking. Then a cracking. Then WHAM! Your in the crawl space next to a Joyce car jack.HAHAHAHA.
LOL, that's the truth Jennifer. Pain from the incident aside, imagine the cleanup?
wow. we see this alot as we bought a 100 year old house that had been abandoned and had lots of wreck-ovations to it, as well as the fact that we invest in vintgage homes and restore them.
This is great information and the pictures are sad, horrifying and hysterical.
I grew up in a house set on rocks. No foundation, just randomly placed rocks to hold the floor joist up.
A lot of those "DIY"ers go for the high end look on the cheep. In my current place every renovation done by the prior homeowner looks "high end" but underneath cheep material, cheep construction, stupid planning. The only thing they did right was gut the basement and leave it for the next homeowner to do.
In the first picture, that metal "bracket" is actually being used in the correct orientation, it is generally called a "joist hanger", it is not nailed off properly though obviously.
The jack might not have been structural. In my old house we used some jacks just to give a little extra support to a big (steel backed) piano that our church donated to us.
This is what happens when illegals with a 2nd grade education try to do their own home repairs without thinking about the consequences and danger that these kind if DIY projects present. We will see more and more of this kind of thingas the invasion increases. You can thank the Liberal politicians and the scumbags at the ACLU for the cancer that is illegal aliens..
oooo an ignorant racist!
^^ Way to go Eyehate. You have succeeded in making a light hearted subject into a platform to push YOUR scumbag ignorant agenda.Find a triple K site to voice your opinion where I'm sure it will be well received and keep it away from here.
what was with that last comment... made me want to comment, to add to the sane comments. This person, Eyehate illegals, is ill. He should be seeking serious help right now.
I can't imagine living in a house like that, you're supposed to feel safe at home but with this kind of house, you can always be at risk of danger. hehehehe

Is this all the same house? Holy jeezus. I think my favorite is the suspended tub.
