Vampires have been scaring and/or seducing audiences for a very long time. Every generation has had their vampire, from that scary bloke who played Nosferatu in 1922 to the modern day sexpot the vampire has become. (Insert Hollywood heartthrob name here.)
I confess I'm not a massive, massive Vamp buff, but I know what I like when I see it, and me likey these Top 10 Vampire Movies. Some of these films are a few decades old, but don't let that put you off -- they were filmed back when people could still act. More importantly, they were filmed back when actors still looked like people, and not like the plastic dolls so many seem to have become.
Also, if you're looking for vampire television series, check out the list on the right. True Blood is a fabulous piece of Americana, while Ultraviolet is a very, very cool British mini-series that I LOVED. Moonlight will make lots of womens happy, and, of course, there's Buffy and Angel. And let's not forget Dark Shadows, I wasn't even allowed to watch that when I was a kid -- compared to the raunch-factor of True Blood, Dark Shadows is rated G!

Bram Stoker's Dracula (Collector's Edition)
Price: $9.28
List Price: $19.94 |
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins; two of my favorite British actors. This movie isn't entirely perfect, but the love story is. Like so many other women, I could watch this every day and still sigh dreamily throughout its entirety. Costuming is fantastic, the setting is fantastic, the story is close to the original. It's a bit racy in parts, and a bit creepy in others, and Gary Oldman is so absolutely brilliant. One of my fave movies of all time, just for the role he plays.
|
Dracula 2000
Price: $5.19
List Price: $14.99 |
Dracula 2000
Gerard Butler makes one sexy Dracula in this Wes Craven vampire film. I'm not going to give you the plot, because it's a bit out there and I don't want to put you off. But, honestly, the story just doesn't matter when Dracula looks this hot.
The Addiction
If a film has Christopher Walken in it, it needs to be watched, if only to see him do what he does best. This film is a bit different to most vampire movies, as it's really more about the slippery slope of immorality. Lily Taylor is a very good actress and Christopher Walken's character is rather unique.
|
The Hunger
Price: $7.87
List Price: $19.98 |
The Hunger
This is a very, very artsy film. Susan Sarandon plays a mortal who gets mixed up in a liason with mortal/vampire couple David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve. Adult cinema, to be sure, you probably don't want your kid watching this, as there is quite a bit of nudity. This is a very clever story, however, and I very much like it.
|
The Lost Boys
Price: $25.00
List Price: $12.98 |
The Lost Boys
A movie from my childhood, when Kiefer Sutherland was famous the first time round. (I had such a crush on him then, you've no idea.) This cult classic is both scary and funny, and stars other actors you'll recognize, such as Jason Patric and Corey Feldman. Teenage vampires in California during the 80s. Think Brat Pack with fangs.
|
Blade (New Line Platinum Series)
Price: $2.35
List Price: $14.96 |
Blade
Wesley Snipes plays a half-vampire/half-human who doesn't indulge his baddie side. Instead, he becomes the hero of humans and slays the Vampires, aided by the fact that he doesn't have any of the vulnerabilities that vampires tend to have. This film is based on the comic of the same name, and if you dig it, there are two more films in the series.

Interview with the Vampire
Price: $7.49
List Price: $19.98 |
Interview with a Vampire
I can remember Oprah flipping out about this film when it first came out. (This was back before she was a proper brand name, and prior to Tom's couch thing.) I remember her actually telling Cruise that she and her audience were not pleased with the film, and I believe it was due to the violence. It's not my favorite vampire film, but Kirsten Dunst was pretty remarkable in it.
|
Underworld (Widescreen Special Edition)
Price: $3.72
List Price: $14.94 |
Underworld
This film is really gorgeous in terms of background and costuming. The story is interesting and detailed -- Selene is a vampire who runs around offing werewolves. She falls for a human who gets bit by a werewolf and then has to decide what she's going to do about it. This film also has of my favorite actors (Bill Nighy) in it. If you like chicks with weapons you'll dig this film. If you like vampire chicks with weapons, you'll really dig this film.
|
From Dusk Till Dawn (Dimension Collector's Series)
Price: $6.36
List Price: $14.99 |
From Dusk till Dawn
George Clooney is in this film. Do I really need to tell you anything more? Not if you're a female, I don't. If you're a male, I'll simply add that Salma Hayek's in it, too. There you go, that really ought to cover it!
|
Nosferatu
Price: $9.01
List Price: $14.98 |
Nosferatu
I've yet to see a scarier vampire. This is the classic German silent film made back in the day where there weren't nuthin' sexy about vampires. If you want to be properly freaked out, have a watch.

Ultraviolet was a miniseries with 6 episodes. I included a link to it in the Amazon box.
I'm looking forward to Let the Right One In (2008), directed by Tomas Alfredson. Love this list.
When I was a kid along time ago we would all run home from school to catch Dark Shadows. Then everyone in the school would talk about what went on the next day. What a great soap!!!
thanks
Jacob
Great site. I love great vampire movies too as well as pirate movies and adventure stories and I'm a writer. How did you get into vampire movies.
omg, i'm addicted to vampires.
i'm so relieved you didn't put twilight on this.

Isabella,
Where's Salem's Lot? This was Stephen King before his crappy movies like Maximum Overdrive.
This movie is creepy beyond creepy (remember the little kid hovering at the window?) and doesn't rely on gore. Nosferatu is truly intimidating in this movie! And the suspense toward the end makes me crap my pants!!
Forget that it has 70's cheesemeister David Soul and a before-he-was-famous Fred Willard--they both play their roles well!
Perhaps you haven't seen it?
I think you would enjoy "The Shadow of the Vampire." It's based on the story of Nosferatu, and it stars John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe. It's REALLY creepy.
I really really want to enjoy True Blood, but I'm from the Southern United States and the fake accents are like nails on a chalkboard to me! I don't know anybody who sounds like that!
I think every vampire movie should be judged on the "scarrrrre meter" set by Nosferatu. It is by far the scarriest vampire ever. It was made without the help of all the computer aided stuff and without color. I still find that old reel the spookiest ever.
Great list here Isabella I've seen most of them
regards Zsuzsy
I watched "Nosferatu" for the first time last summer and I can honestly say that it was really scary.
Pretty nice list. You might check out Innocent Blood and Habit for some old school vamp movies. Both movies are still in the era of acting and looking human, which I agree most of Hollywood has gotten away from these days.
I'm so glad you put Bram Stoker's Dracula first! I think it is still the best interpretation of the book. I can't wait til True Blood comes back on HBO - I am addicted to that show! Thanks for the great list! (And thank you for not putting Twilight on here).
Try the brilliant cult film Daughters of Darkness (1971, Belgium made) With the incredible Delphine Seyrig as Elizabeth Bathory and visually stunning photography this one the clear prototype for Tony Scott's The Hunger. Very Highly Recommended for fans of adult horror films
i like the iinterview with a vampire but what about a top ten and some more relevant titles of vampires like from 2000-present
wow, i can't believe i missed that i missed the addiction, i love christopher walken films. thanks!
why has no one commented on the hammer films, especially christopher lee. scaird the hell out of me when I was a kid, I know a little campy now but still deserves to be noted. Comments anyone?????????????

Like the list, but "Near Dark" should have been on there. I loved "The Addiction", really weird.
Any idea where I can get the Ultraviolet TV series? I saw like one episode.
