67What I really want to do is ACT.
Top 5 of Monday, March 31st 2008
A NEW LIST WILL BE RELEASED EVERY NIGHT AT 8PM for the following day. The Polls will remain open for 28 hours OR until Midnight EST of the date above..
Every female rock star in the 80s got their own free audtion for hollywood and a few of them probably wish they never did. These are Classic 80 Females....Acting Badly!
There is no criteria for your vote. You can pick one that you feel the acting really bad or you can pick the woman you feel did the best job acting. It's all up to you. Randon picks are also encouraged. No pressure to even speak a # is fine too. Just pick one.
AND THE NOMINEES ARE....
1) PAT BENATAR is our first candidate. It should be noted she did star in a little seen film called Union City http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081687/ and the1989 ABC Afterschool Special Torn Between Two Fathers. Steven Spielberg never came calling.
The classic scene is the video is when she challenges the man who appears to be the pimp in this sordid tale of a runaway in the big city. The dance routine is right there with Thriller in terms of memorablility. Especially the hands smacking down sideways move. Priceless.
The single "Love Is a Battlefield" was certified gold in the fall of 1985. This song went to #5 on The Billboard Charts - the highest she ever got. (We Belong also went #5)
Her hits in order were.... Heartbreaker '79~~~We Live For Love '80~~~You Better Run '80~~~Hit Me With Your Best Shot '80~~~Hell Is for Children '80~~~Treat Me Right '81~~~Fire And Ice '81~~~Promises In The Dark '81~~~Shadows of the Night '82~~~Little Too Late '83~~~Looking For a Stranger '83~~~Love Is A Battlefield '83~~~We Belong '84~~~Ooh Ooh Song '85~~~Invincible (Theme From "The Legend of Billie Jean") '85~~~Sex as a Weapon '85~~~Le Bel Age '86~~~All Fired Up '88~~~Christmas in America '01
#1 Pat Benatar - "Love Is a Battlefield"
The story of 'til Tuesday and Aimee Mann
The "Voices Carry" video won the VMA for Best New Artist and was played heavily on MTV. It depicts an oppressive boyfriend trying to convert Mann to his upper-class lifestyle; she finally lashes out at him during a concert at Carnegie Hall, standing up from her seat in the audience and belting the lyrics ("He said, shut up! He said, shut up! Oh God, can't you keep it down?...") as she removes her cap to reveal her signature spiky, rat-tailed hair.
She would later ditch the hair and the record label and the band altogether. She went solo and became a profilic and critically accliamed singer/songwriter. Her songs even inspired "There Will Be Blood" director Paul Thomas Anderson to write and direct the Much-Loved and Much-Hated film Magnolia based on short stories he wrote inspired by Aimee Mann songs. She would receive an Academy Award nomination for the song "Save Me" which she wrote specifically for the film.
She also played a small role the Coen Brothers' cult classic bowling film The Big Lebowski where she playedNihilist Woman, Franz' Girlfriend. The other nihilists in her posse were Peter Stormare and Flea from the band RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS. Her character had her toe cut off in order to fake a kidnapping.
Aimee dated musician Jules Shear before 'til Tuesday and years later married musician Michael Penn who had the 90s hit "No Myth".
The songs you need to know are: Voices Carry, What About Love were the 'til Tuesday songs. Her solo stuff >> I Should've Known, Wise Up, Driving With One Hand on the Wheel, Deathly, You Do, One (Nilsson Cover), Momentum, and the aforementioned Save Me.
#2 Aimee Mann in "Voices Carry"' by 'til Tuesday
We now bring you to....IRONIC MOMENTS IN BRITISH ROCK.
The one song Chrissie Hynde hates is the one song of hers that every woman loves. So she grits her teeth and plays it. This is also true of her ex-husband Jim Kerr. He hates the most popular song of his career too. Don't You (Forget About Me) was a soundtrack song he didn't write or want to record but it probably extended the life of his band SIMPLE MINDS exponentially. Life is funny like that. She was married to Jim Kerr of Simple Minds from 1984-1990.
The Pretenders Hits in order are:
The Wait '79~~~Kid '79~~~Brass In Pocket '80~~~Stop Your Sobbing '80~~~Message of Love '81~~~Back On The Chain Gang '82~~~Middle of the Road '83~~~My City Was Gone (Back to Ohio)~~~Show Me '84~~~I Got You Babe (with UB40) '85~~~Don't Get Me Wrong '86~~~I'll Stand By You '94
#3 Chrissie Hynde in "Brass in Pocket" by The Pretenders
The Queen of Disco was in on it too.
4) She Works Hard for the Money became one of the most played songs of all time, the Grammy-nominated track became a pro-feminist anthem and was a staple on MTV, making her the first woman of color to have a video air in heavy rotation on the channel. The infectious recording was also-surprisingly-Donna's biggest-ever R&B hit (#1 for three weeks) and had frequent play on BET.
She was a veteran of musical theatre having toured Europe in musicals like Hair, Porgy and Bess and Godspell. She had at this point already had her movie moment when she played (duh!) and up-and-coming young singer in the Cheezetastic Disco Movie Thank God It's Friday with Jeff Goldblum.
She doesn't act out the video like I thought though. A Classic nonetheless.
Donna's hits in order are: Love To Love You Baby '75~~~I Feel Love '77~~~Last Dance '78~~~MacArthur Park '78~~~Heaven Knows '79~~~Hot Stuff '79~~~Bad Girls '79~~~Dim All The Lights '79~~~No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) with Brabra Streisand '79~~~On The Radio '80~~~The Wanderer '80~~~Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger) '82~~~She Works Hard For The Money '83~~~Unconditional Love (with Musical Youth) '83~~~There Goes My Baby '84~~~This Time I Know It's For Real '89
#4 Donna Summer in "She Works Hard For The Money"
Technical Difficulties and Legal Mumbo Jumbo!
5) I already used Papa Don't Preach. This spot was supposed to go to Cyndi Lauper in "Time After Time but the link won't work. So I improvised.
Instead of a singer acting I went with an actress singing! Anybody remember this??
#5 Tracey Ullman in "They Don't Know"

I hope you guys enjoyed seeing the hits strung together like that for nostalgia's sake. It was fun to guess how many I knew off the top of my head and then check to see which ones I forgot.

Re: Pat Benetar
All I know is, if my "hostesses" danced like those girls, my dance hall'd go straight out of business.
