This is a nice easy hub, assuming that the search engine traffic (that may well be you) is looking for a list of the largest car manufacturers? Because 'Top' can mean a few different things. Well if that isn't want you were looking for, it is what you are getting. Here is a list of the worlds top 10 passenger car manufacturers in 2005 (Source:- OICA Statistics Committee). Of course, these stats are likely to differ significantly following the collapse of world financial systems - however it is difficult to find more recent reliable statistics at this stage.

1. Toyota (Japan)

The world's most active car manufacturer during 2005 was Japanese company Toyota, who had a total of 6,157,038 cars roll off of the production line during 2005. The widest produced model is likely to be the popular Corolla,

2. General Motors (USA)

Next on the list, and half a million away from Toyota, is American company General Motors who during 2005 produced a hefty 5,657,225 passenger cars. Amongst GM's more famous brands worldwide are Cadillac and Chevrolet.

3. Volkswagen group (Germany)

At third on the list and around 700,000 card behind General Motors is German business Volkswagen group with a total of 4,979,487 cars rolling off the production line in 2005. A large proportion of these cars are likely to be from the 'Golf' range.

4. Ford (USA)

Sitting at number 4 on the list is the second largest American manufacturer Ford who completed 3,514,496 passenger cars in 2005, more than 2 million less than General Motors. It should be noted however that Ford does have a popular range of vans and other non passenger vehicles.

5. Honda (Japan)

At number 5 on this list is another Japanese business, this time its Honda who produced a little less than Ford with 3,324,282 completed passenger cars. It could perhaps be noted that Honda also produce a large quantity of two wheeled vehicles which are not included in these statistics. The biggest selling vehicle is likely to to be the Honda Civic.

6. PSA Peugeot Citroen (France)

At number 6 is the first of two French businesses on this list. Peugeot Citroen, which of course is the producer of both Peugeot and Citroen models, completed 2,982,690 cars during 1995.

7. Hyundai-Kia (South Korea)

At number 7 on the list is South Korean manufacturer Hyundai-Kai who produced 2,726,000 cars during the year 2005.

8. Nissan (Japan)

At number 8 is yet another Japanese company, the 3rd on the list, and makes up the so called 'Asian 4'. Nissan produced 2,697,362 cars during 2005.

9. Renault-Dacia-Samsung (France)

The 9th largest passenger car producer of 2005 were French business Renault who finished the year with some 2,195,162 cars completed.

10. DaimlerChrysler (Germany)

The 10th and final manufacturer on this list is German firm DaimlerChrysler, perhaps most famous for their luxury Mercedes cars.

I'm really surpised that Nissan comes in behind Hundai, but it's equally encouraging to see two French (cheese eating surrender monkeys ) car companies making the list.

Is this production for world-wide sales or is it limited to the U.S.?

Hi Liam, this is global production. In fact, the car doesnt even have to sell... it could well be over-production. If it has come off of a production line somewhere in the world, then it is counted. The car market is a strange thing, you might have been suprised to see Hyundai above Nissan, but I hadn't even heard of half of the brands produced by GM when I check a minute ago! A lot of brands are very geographically concentrated, In fact I could go into much greater depth. Maybe I will some time, thanks for stopping by.

I was surprised to learn that Toyota is actually losing money, but it still at the top. I read somewhere that the world is over producing cars by 20 million a year. The information you present is a bit dated.

@MikeNV - Yes the information is a little dated, but comprehensive industry wide stats for the past couple of years are hard to come by. As soon as find some which are reliable enough, I will completely rewrite the article.

@lyricsingray - glad you enjoyed it.

Hi Ryan. Thanks for the list. Wonder what will happen with GM once they got out of bankruptcy? I can understand why Hyundai - Kia went ahead of Nissan. That was about the time when Hyundai started aggressively expanding its line-up and operations.

Thanks Ryan. I think that MikeNV made me think of a good question you might address when you re-write the article: how much did each company make or lose (in addition to where they rank in the world standing as far as production and sales). I know recent events have changed the list a bit since 2005. And it is very interesting to note that though Toyota is currently 'number one' as far as sales - they have lost money! While the current number two (Volkswagen) posted earnings of 6.33 Billion euros last year. An iteresting side note you made about Volkswagen was " A large proportion of these cars are likely to be from the 'Golf' range." This is particularily interesting when you find out that the world's number one selling car is actually the Volkswagen Golf! A fact I did not know until a few years ago (I think it was 2000 when I first heard this, and it has been true every year since then - outselling toyota's number one car (yaris) two to one!) Volkswagen plans to take over the world by the year 2018. That is their stated goal. They are on-track to do it by 2012. Their new production plant in Chatanooga TN will be up and running in 2011 with a capacity of 800,000 cars a year!

My ole man and I are patriotic, almost to a fault, if that was possible, we believe very much in buying American made, we believe in our country and doing what we can to support Americans may they have been born here, are visiting (legally), or have immigrated here and become citizens but there is one exception, vehicles, we buy Japanese vehicles. Larry and his family spent 5 1/2 years in Japan while Larry was stationed there in the Air Force and he learned that they make a quality vehicle.

He said one time that they would run they're cars into the ground, go forever without changing the oil and they still ran. I'm actually working on a hub about this.

My ole man has a 2004 Nissan xterra, since I've known him he's had to do a break job and two oil changes, (a third one needs to be done soon). He had a flat but that was in the driveway due to a massive ice storm, he later bought four new tires, changed the windsheild wipers and it runs great!!! Great hub
