Top Culinary Schools

This blog is intended to give you a guide on finding a top culinary schools in the United States. The information contained should work regardless of your location. Various things are covered such as what to look for, criteria, whats covered in your course and how to join. Other vital factors are tuition costs, housing availability, and length of program. A particular emphasis is also placed on picking a course, Do you want to focus on just culinary or do you feel your passion lies with pastry. This is your first big decision when you are thinking about culinary school. You also need to think about what fields within the culinary industry you would like to have a career in. Do you want to become a chef or pastry chef in a restaurant or hotel, a caterer, cake decorator, or a personal chef? Or perhaps you don't feel as though you expertise lies with food and may be considering a career in hospitality which can also be learned at culinary school.

Two of the most important things to take in consideration when deciding between culinary schools is location and whether they are an accredited institute or not. An accredited institution will allow you to get your foot in the door much quicker when it comes to job opportunities. By accredited I mean that the degree you receive is recognized at a National or Worldwide level. Culinary school accreditation can range from the ACF, American Culinary Federation, or Le Cordon Bleu. Top culinary schools such as the Culinary Institute of America, CIA, will always be accredited.

Location is important because it can greatly affect your budget. Using for example the Culinary Institute of America who have campuses in New York, California, and Texas. Obviously New York and California would be the most expensive cities to live in so if you were worried about money perhaps Texas would be a better option. At this point you have to decide if it is better to live in the dorms at the culinary school or rent an apartment. Work out the costs of both options to find which is cheaper for you. Of course if you decide to live off campus just remember in addition to rent and food you need to pay for utilities. While the cost of attending a top culinary school may seem high don't worry you still have options available to make it possible. Some culinary schools such as the Institute of Culinary Education, ICE, in New York have programs set up where you can work at the school while attending in order to reduce or pay off completely the cost of your tuition. Most top culinary schools also have numerous financial advisers that can help you with securing a loan or government grant. Each year there are plenty of scholarships that are available if you are willing to put a little bit of work into them. These scholarships are usually posted on the James Beard website.

You also have to consider the job market for when you graduate. Some cities may have great opportunities for pastry chefs but not traditional chefs. During your course at culinary school you should make sure you keep you eye on the job market and where the best place for you to go to get what you want. It is also very important for any culinary school to have an internship program. This way you can gain experience and contacts within the culinary world before you graduate from school.

As I stated before research is the key to finding the perfect culinary school for you. Take some time to investigate different culinary schools online first and then as a follow up if possible visit the school in person and set up a tour. This will give you a real sense of the school, its teachers, and classes. Also, don't be afraid to ask some student their opinions on their experience.
