Diabetes Myths - Reliable Diabetes Info Can Be Hard To Come By.

There are a myriad of myths about diabetes' treatment. A diabetic should know truthful info about his/her diabetes and its management. Why? Not because it isn't offered, but because so many differing (often conflicting) suggestions are available. Last year I had 25 doctor appointments, most of which related to complications of my diabetes from my youth when II did not respect this disease. Of those I was given suggestions that contradicted each other. I have learned a lot through the school of hard knocks and my diabetes is now under control, although it is a lifelong project. The best thing I have learned is that it is manageable! However, it takes work!

I though it might be useful to my readers if I set out some of the myths I have discovered as well as research links for you to examine which gives a variety of diabetes information. This might give you a preparatory point which to discuss management and a dietetic diet plan with your doctor. Always pursue your doctor's advice.

Five General Myths about Diabetes

  1. Diabetes is not a killer disease – False! You may not die of diabetes per say, but its complications kills millions of people. It is said that every 10 seconds someone dies from diabetes related reasons. Don’t be fooled!
  2. Diabetes cannot be prevented – False in most type 2 cases. Diabetes type 2, diabetes mellitus or adult onset diabetes can be preventable in up to 80% of the folks. Physical activity, diet and obesity are all contributing causes. In its early stages diabetes can be prevented or postponed by life style changes. As diabetes matures it becomes harder and harder to maintain weight loss. However, there I no doubt that life style and diabetes are linked.
  3. Diabetes predominantly affects men – False! In fact, diabetes affects both men and women and younger people, and is increasing among women. It is also more and more dramatically seen among youth. Diabetes will impinge on some 5 million people between ages 20-39, roughly 30 million between ages 40-59 and over 40 million between ages 60-79.
  4. Diabetes care is not expensive – False! Diabetes care is very costly and has the possibility to cripple any healthcare system. This is true for you personally as well. My biggest budge item is health care. At one time my personal health insurance was $1200/month, and I had to add to that the co-pays. I am a blessed man in that God has helped provide for me. However, I wish I would have heeded this hub 30 years ago when I was diagnosed! I urge you to do better!
  5. We all have to die of something – True but False. You cannot avid death, but it doesn’t not have to be the slow, painful and premature way of diabetes. Awareness and Care-ness can give you a Fairness in life!
