When Films Tackle Football

I love football and I love movies, but the Academy separates both.

The Oscars have wrapped up, and as always you never see much mention of football movies. The only notable football movie I can recall this year is The Express, which I haven't seen yet.

Throughout the years I've seen my fair share of gridiron dramas and comedies. Here is my top 10 list which includes movies and TV series.

10. Brian's Song

One of the greatest made for TV movies of all time, this true story is a true inspiration of how friendship and sports can bring people together and overcome racism, injury, and cancer. This movie is a tear jerker.

9. Remember the Titans

Also based on a true story, Denzel leads a team through Americas racial battles. The movie rewnforces the idea that one the helmet is on, we're all football players.

8. Jerry Maguire

You complete my Top 10 list. This pigskin based chick flick shows life from the other side of the field as Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr's business loyalty and friendship triumphs through adversity. Cuba is Film Football's only player to bring home the Oscar.

7. Friday Night Lights TV Series

I'm hooked into this drama of football life in the boonies. New characters and story-lines continue to keep the show fresh. Despite a lack of actual football action, the evolution of the shows characters keep you drawn in. All episodes are still online so you can knock it out in a week. Sad part is, some believe Season 3 will be the last season. I'd hate too see it go, but the core of the characters are seniors now.

6. Friday Night Lights Movie

Billy Bob Thorton always plays coach roles pretty good. (remember Bad News Bears) For a couple hours, you see why football is life in some parts of the country. The drawback to this movie is historical in accuracies (Under Armour in 80s) otherwise it

5. Little Giants

This is probably my generation's first exposure to football flicks. It's the tale of a down and out team that can win big. It's also the reason many of us tried to make our mouths foam with Alka Seltzer while lining up.

Classic David vs Goliath Type Movie

4. The Program

James Caan is back as a coach this time  In an excellent movie that is very action based.  No one pulls sports roles better than Omar Epps. The team spirit and dedication is shown throughout the film. The crazy linebacker was everyones idol while in high school, and it also showed some of the negative affects of roid rage.

This is the stuff that gets you pumped up

3. ESPN's Original Drama Series: playmakers

1 season with an open ending was enough to make this my #3 pick. The show was so good, rumor has it that the NFL had a hand in pulling the plug. The series inflicted all of the NFL's drama on to one team during 12 episodes. Omar Gooding Was going wil

2. The Waterboy

This is a hillarious "punch you in the face comedy" that only Adam Sandler can pull off. The movie is an inspiration that discovers a diamond in the rough, and reminded offensive coordinators how to run the half back option pass to the quarterback. This movie was such a hit, my friends and I even named our flag football team The Muddogs.

This is how the Waterboy goes "Captain Insano"

1. Any Given Sunday

For two and a half hours, we saw every aspect of pro football through the eyes of Oliver Stone. From the rising star, to fading force, embattled coach, and crooked trainers, this movie has it all. Fine acting performances by Al Pacino, LL Cool J, Lawrence Taylor, and Jim Brown solidified the film. Yes the football legends can act, although they were playing pretty much themselves. Most notably Steamin' Willie Beaman was a breakout role for Jaime Foxx. This movie is where the world realized Wanda from In Living Color is a serious actor. The game of inches speech is one of the most memorable speeches from any movie.

The Greatest Speech from the Greatest Football Movie

Those are my Top 10 Favorites, now there's a few football movies I haven't had the pleasure of seeing yet, and there were several movies/TV shows that were close such as The Replacements, Coach, etc. Hopefully I see more of the classics, and I can't wait to see some of the new ones. Let me know what you think!

Man, you forgot Rudy. Your list is now disqualified!

But if I had to go by your list, I think Remember the Titans was the best one.

I agree with goldentoad about Rudy but you also could have The Longest Yard (either version). But again if we're going by your list I'd have to pick Brians Song. The others are all great too. Nice Hub.

I don't know why, but for some reason I just wasn't a big rudy fan, maybe because of that movie, every team I played against seemed to have some sort of Rudy wanna be haha

I'll have to check out this Best of Times one of these days, but I actually really like Longest Yard, i wish I saw it before I did this list.

For me Remember the Titans wins hands down with Any Given Sunday coming a close second. Despite being predictable I would have to include Invincible in my list and also Gridiron Gang.
