Top Stress Busting Activities
67You already likely know that stress and health do not usually go hand in hand. While there is definitely positive benefits from eustress, which is short term stress that works to enhance your life, there is a lot of negative effects that are seen when you start experiencing distress, the more commonly form of stress that's known. If you don't look into ways to deal with this distress you could start suffering from an impaired immune system and put yourself at risk for burnout as well as depression.
Luckily, doing a few things you truly enjoy and making small behaviour modifications can put you on the road to having a much healthier relationship with stress in your life.
Here are some things to consider.
Exercise
Exercise is always a great way to not only make yourself feel better about your body but also to reduce stress. While exercising, your body is going to release a great deal of endorphins that will help to remove stress and leave you feeling energized and ready to fight whatever is causing you the stress in the fist place.
Focus On Natural Food
If you are feeling a lot more stressed lately, the first thing you should do is remove all the processed foods from your diet. These are going to contribute to sharp rises and falls in blood sugar levels which not only leads you feeling cranky, but can also make you more susceptible to feeling very stressed out.
Look Around You
The simple act of looking around you, be it at nature or at all that you currently have in your life - a nice home, a loving family, a significant other who really cares about you - whatever the case may be, can really help to put whatever it is that is stressing you out in perspective. Often we get way to worked up over little things that do not really matter in the long run so realizing when this is happening is the first step to truly becoming stress free.
Talk To A Friend
Many people unfortunately have a tendency to pull away when feeling stressed. This can lead them to feeling more overwhelmed and unsure about what to do. Instead, try confiding in a close friend about the problem you are having. Oftentimes you are not thinking completely clearly and they can help bring you back to reality and come up with a workable solution to the problem.
Get More Sleep
While always wanting to sleep can be a signal that a depression problem is brewing, if you have not been regularly getting a good night's rest, this could very well be what the problem is. With lack of sleep comes a reduced energy level and that usually leads you feeling less than fully prepared to deal with whatever life throws at you. Be sure to aim for a full 7 hours per night to prevent this. While it may be tempting to forgo sleep, since you think you'll be more productive, in all actuality work done when in a state of lack of sleep is probably not going to be as efficient as work done fully rested. Keep this in mind next time you are tempted to tune into late night TV.
Breathe
Individuals who are highly stressed often start showing signs of shallow breathing. This is going to bring less oxygen into their body and cause them feel fatigued. Since you can't think and perform your best when you are tired, this shallow breathing is going to indirectly lead to you feeling stressed out. Sit back and relax for ten minutes and do some deep breathing. You'll likely be pleasantly surprised at how much better you feel afterwards.
So don't let stress affect you on a continual basis. Start taking action now to learn what measures you can take to prevent it from creeping up on you. If it means taking ten minutes at the end of the day for a quick bath or falling asleep to your favourite novel, do what you have to do. Your workouts will improve when you are less stressed (since you will recover faster) and you will also have a higher chance of sticking with your diet.
