Top Ten British Royals in Line for the English Throne

At the present Queen Elizabeth II is on the British throne, but who will take over from her?   Most people seem to realize that Charles, William and Harry are next in line, but after that there is sometimes a little confusion.

 

Here are the top ten Royals (in order of succession) in line for the British throne.

1. Prince Charles

Prince Charles Philip Arthur George was born on 14th November 1948, the eldest child of the then Princess Elizabeth.   When his mother became Queen in 1952 Charles became the heir apparent to the British throne.   He has actually been the longest waiting heir apparent in history, beating out his great grandfather Edward VII in 2007.

 

Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 and together they had two children – the Princes William and Harry.   The couple divorced in 1996 and Prince Charles remarried Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005.

 


2. Prince William

Prince William Arthur Philip Louis was born to Charles and Diana (the Prince and Princess of Wales) on 21st June 1982.   Prince William attended EtonCollege and St AndrewsUniversity.   When he was 15 his mother was killed in a car crash and he walked behind his mother’s coffin with his younger brother Harry at her funeral procession.

 

Prince William attended the SandhurstRoyalMilitaryAcademy and became a Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry, he is now training to be a search and rescue pilot with the Royal Air Force.

 

Prince William has had a long term girlfriend Kate Middleton and now in his late 20s the press are always speculating on a royal engagement.

 

3. Prince Harry

Prince Henry Charles Albert David was born on 15th September 1984 and has always been called Prince Harry.   Prince Harry also attended EtonCollege although he chose not to go to University, spending a gap year working in an African orphanage in Lesotho.  

 

Prince Harry joined the Household Cavalry and also saw action in Afghanistan for a couple of months in 2007-2008.    He is presently training to become a helicopter pilot with the Army Air Corps.

4. Prince Andrew, Duke of York

Prince Andrew Albert Christian Edward was the first child born to a reigning monarch for 103 years when he made his appearance on 19th February 1960.   He is the third child of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh and their second son.   He was referred to as Prince Andrew until his marriage.

 

After a number of years in the tabloid under the moniker of Randy Andy he settled down with Sarah Ferguson – they were set up by Andrew’s sister in law Diana, Princess of Wales.

 

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson were married on 23rd July 1986 and became the Duke and Duchess of York.   Prince Andrew and Fergie (as his wife was affectionately known) had two children, the Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.   The royal couple divorced in 1996 and Prince Andrew has not remarried.

 

5. Princess Beatrice

Born Beatrice Elizabeth Mary on 8th August 1988 she was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York and Queen Elizabeth II’s second granddaughter.   Princess Beatrice is currently studying at GoldsmithsUniversity in London.

6. Princess Eugenie

Princess Eugenie Victoria Helena was born on 23rd March 1990 and is the youngest child of the Duke and Duchess of York.    The Princess is starting a degree in English and Arts at NewcastleUniversity in September 2009.

7. Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex

Prince Edward Anthony Richard Louis, the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh was born on 10th March 1964.   Prince Edward married Sophie Rhys-Jones on 19th June 1999 and they were given the titles Earl and Countess of Wessex.

 

The couple have two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

 

8. James, Viscount Severn

James Alexander Philip Theo was born on 17th December 2007 and is the second child, but only son of the Earl and Countess of Wessex.   James will have the title Viscount Severn.

9. Lady Louise Windsor

Lady Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary came into the world on 8th November 2003 prematurely.   She was the first born child of the Earl and Countess of Wessex.   Lady Louise was born with the eye disorder exotropia, her parents shielded her from the press for much of her earlier life which fed rumours that her condition was far more serious.

10. Princess Anne, Princess Royal

Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise was born on 15th August 1950 before her mother was Queen.   She is the second child of Queen Elizabeth and her only daughter.   Princess Anne married Captain Mark Phillips on 14th November 1973 and had two children – Peter and Zara Phillips.   Princess Anne refused to give her children royal titles.

 

Her marriage to Captain Phillips was dissolved in 1992 and she quietly married Commander Timothy Laurence in the same year.

 

Princess Anne works tirelessly for charity and in recognition of the amount of work she does her mother bestowed the title of Princess Royal on her in 1987.
