Fast Money for Slow Times

The economy is still in the crapper. We know this.

In spite of all recent the news chatter and blah-blah-blah about "the first green shoots" and what may well be the beginning of a possible pre-recovery period leading up to what could maybe perhaps sort of turn into a real recovery--Despite all that nonsense--it's not like we can't all see the truth.

We're doomed.

Oh yeah, the economy is a big fat stinky mess, and those few economists who are trying to tell the truth about it say we have at least another full year or two of bad times before we can even think about whipping out our wallets again, and even then, things will be different. Some parts of the economy will never come back. Everyone will be living a lot more carefully.

Meanwhile, we still have to eat, don't we?

I mean, just because our respective fearless leaders and brain-dead representatives have their heads permanently inserted in their posteriors, and just because all their wants and needs are already well-met by lobbyists, sycophants, and goons, that doesn't mean that we don't still have to drag our sorry butts from day to day and feed the dog and scrabble up a meal and pay the rent.

We do.

Since lots of us are not able to work to get the money we need for these things anymore, I thought it might be fun to do one of those How to Get Money Fast hubs that list some alternative ways of scraping together some cash. There are lots of those kinds of hubs here at Hub Pages.

And now I'm adding another one to the pile.

Enjoy!

  1. Have a garage sale. Thrift shops and charities are going begging for second hand merchandise in this economy. People are either hanging on to their old stuff or selling it themselves. The market for cheap, used, usable goods is beyond hot right now. Spend some time tagging all your stuff with prices and advertising your sale, and you'll get better results. Don't forget to set yourself up with a box of change, and think about what you want to do with whatever doesn't sell. Get a tax receipt for any donations.
  2. Pawn stuff. Pawn shops have seen a huge uptick in merchandise over the past six months, but most of it is crap. If you have anything of actual value that you can part with, now might be the right time. It depends on how hungry you are. Stuff they like: gold, diamonds, newer electronics, good bicycles, guns, musical instruments. Stuff they might take but aren't so nuts about: DVDs, CDs, video games, broken stuff, really old stuff.
  3. Sell your blood. Ick? No, actually it helps people and they will pay you for it. What you are really selling is your blood plasma, the clear stuff that your red blood cells float around in. To find a plasma donation center near you go to http://www.pptaglobal.org/ or http://www.pptaglobal.org/plasma/find.aspx. According to maddhubber's hub on plasma donation, you can make up to $260 per month this way, and you will help a sick or injured person in the process. Check out madhubber's hub at the embedded link to find out everything you ever wanted to know about how it works and then some.
  4. Cash in your unwanted gold jewelry and old coins. I see these ads on TV all the time, and I always ask BIll, my best friend and roomie, where do we keep all of our 'unwanted gold jewelry and old coins'? Because I can't ever seem to find them. He can't find them either. It's a mystery. In the event that you actually have gold that you just don't want, you can indeed cash it in for less than it is actually worth. A pawn shop will also do this for you. Some people really do happen to have tons of jewelry they don't wear and coins that pile up, so if you are one of those people then...
  5. Cash in your change. If you throw away pennies, (and lots of people do, believe it or not), stop doing that and start saving your change. When you get enough of it, roll it up yourself (don't go to one of those change machines--it will charge you 8 cents on each dollar you dump in there). Put an address label and your phone number on each roll. Then take the rolls to your bank or supermarket office and ask for cash.
  6. Pick up some freelance projects. With so many people out of work, freelance job boards are pretty hot right now. If you can write, or if you have web design or programming skills, financial skills, clerical skills, or any other kind of skill you can market remotely, go to www.elance.com, www.guru.com, or www.odesk.com and check out the project listings. On a good week I have been able to pick up between $100-$500 this way, depending on what's listed and how aggressively I go after the work.
  7. Place an ad for errands, laundry, yard work, or dog walking. You don't have to print up business cards and hire an accountant to work for yourself, you just have to be willing to work and get the word out to people who need help. One of my kids picked up $50 a week doing laundry for elderly people in her own home (she picked it up and dropped it off for them), and I weeded perennial gardens for a summer and had no trouble staying busy just through word of mouth. Post a flyer at your local supermarket and/or community center, or place a cheap ad in the newspaper.
  8. Sell your crafts. Do you make something that other people are always asking about? Consider making lots more and then sell it on consignment at local second hand stores or sell it directly from a booth at your local farmers market or online. I know a woman locally who earned a decent living selling decorative bird houses and chachski at craft fairs five or six times a year. She'd make a bunch of the cutesy stuff, rent her table, sell out, start over. Repeat as necessary.
  9. Rent out a room. If you own your home or are buying your home, think about how you could rearrange your space to make room for a boarder. Lots of people are having housing issues right now, and while you do want to be careful about who you let into your personal space, taking in a boarder can help both you and the person who lets the extra room. Decide ahead of time what you will offer and what will be off limits so there isn't any confusion over privileges and boundaries.
  10. Borrow against your life insurance. Do you have a whole life policy that you never think about and that you ought to cancel because it's a total rip off (in terms of actual interest earned and so forth) but that you never got around to nixing? You may be able to borrow against the equity you've built up in that puppy, or in other words, borrow the money from yourself and then pay yourself back. Dig that thing out and call the carrier and ask. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Well, that's ten.

I know you can probably think of ten more if you try.

I'm not suggesting that these ideas can substitute for a steady income, a good job, a healthy economy, or anything else. I'm just throwing them out there as emergency ideas for those times when we all need a little help and need it fast.

Good luck! And don't forget--It's always darkest right before everything goes totally black.

My daughters and I have been listing all our books at amazon- pays better than a garage sale, lol. In fact, I am headed up to the attic now. Dang hubpages keep distracting me, haha. Thanks for the hub and the camaraderie!

PS Those freelance pages are so overwhelming. How do you begin to maneuver through them and figure out bids and even feel qualified?! Have you written this into a hub, because I need to read it if you have. These sites really boggle the mind.

HI! Good hub! These days, we all need ways to get money outside our normal jobs or work. What I did was to distribute flyers on the side. I've written two hubs on this, one, about what I've gotten from it, and another about having gotten my first client. I advertise through Craigslist in the Portland, OR area, and through this, I've had several clients since. Also, at least one of my clients has recommended my services through others.

Another idea that has made me some money, is resume writing. These are very simple resumes, but enough to get people started in a job search. Again, I've advertised through Craigslist and have had two paying custoomers so far. However, I've learned that I may have to have customers pay at least half in advance, as two others have stiffed me, as I sent the resumes through e-mail attachments, whereas, my flyer clients all see me in person, and none of them has ever stiffed me.

Other ideas I'm considering is going to homes and businesses and shredding unwanted documents for them, using a simple cross cut shredder, and lots of trash bags, and also making videos of people's possessions for their homeowner's and renter's insurance policies, so they have proof of losses should a fire or other disaster take place.

One website that I've found helpful is Steve Gillman's unusual ways to make and save money website. I subscribe to his online newsletter, which often has ideas worth considering.

I wrote this comment twice and deleted it because it was getting too long, going on about what it takes to do street art. But I think what I have in hand is an Answering Hub -- let me see if there's a way I can do that.

Hi Violetsun--I was thinking the same thing. I'm going to go through my old books this weekend and see what turns up!

robert--that sounds like a good way to go about it, or maybe a hub of your own? I should think the current economy would be an opportunity for some would be street artists to take the plunge. :)

V.C.--Check out the hub that is linked to that tip. It lists web sites where you can look up what is available in your area.

Tatjana-Mihela--Thanks for pointing that out. I think in a lot of way this crisis is helping Americans 'get their heads right' and realize what really matters in life, and that can't be a bad thing.

2patricias--Thanks for that tip. I've never listed anything at Ebay but I always wanted to. Maybe I'll take the leap now. :)

pgrundy profile image

pgrundy  says:

Thanks breakfastpop!

RVDaniels--I think we are indeed going in that direction. I don't think it's a bad thing at all. We've already made lots of changes in our household. We don't spend like we did, we buy as little as we can, grow what food we can, use more second hand and discarded items, fix things instead of replacing them, and we are working on making our monthly recurring bills as small as possible. There's something messed up about the whole idea of a 'consumer economy'. You can't have an economy based on buying cheap crap. That's just nuts. I'm surprised it took this long to collapse. Thanks for stopping by!

John  says:

Great hub, I'll keep those in mind. I like to add a few other ways to make money, these include:

Collecting and selling coins - By buying from reputable dealers and private sources through classified ads in local papers and selling them to private contacts and mail order advertisements in coins and other collectors' hobby magazines.

Selling magazines - This requires no office and it can be evening work. Write to publishers requesting the right to get subscriptions. Approach schools, hospitals, offices and private people in their home and at their business. Solicit orders by telephone and direct mail advertising.

How'd I miss this one? Must have been published during my engrossment in the Social Security/Wells Fargo bureaucracy.

Already cashed in my unwanted gold (and some gemstones). I never fully trusted those services that send you an envelope -- what if they take your jewelry and never pay you (call me paranoid). So I took mine to my friendly neighborhood jeweler -- same one that designed/created my engagement and wedding rings. Those are next up on the block and Hubby and I will wear cigar bands. LOL.

As always, GREAT advice. Of course, I notice you don't mention an obvious one. Well, not obvious for most of us, but I suspect there are some Hubbers who could make a pretty penny selling.... themselves:-). Only half kidding here. Maybe after a few more months of fewer groceries I might... oh nevermind. If I was destined to be a crack ho I would have done it by now:-).

Tutoring can be a good sideline. If you have a university degree in almost anything, you are qualified to tutor school kids privately. And it can be a great way of remembering all that stuff you'd forgotten because you haven't used it for years.

If you understand musical notation, there's a reasonable rate for hand copying orchestral and band parts from the main score.

My home made wine is better than cheap supermarket plonk, but unfortunately it's strictly illegal to sell it (or even to make it in Qatar!)

How about proof reading? I don't know how you'd get into this, but I'm sure there must be a need.

Good topic, Pam :)

Great ideas, Pgrundy! My mother is starting to sell off items she no longer needs now that my dad has passed away and I was shocked at how much she made in one two-day garage sale. It was over $1000 and she didn't have ANY big ticket items. No furniture or appliances. It was all small stuff. Her sister decided to have one last week and they allowed me to bring over some boxes of stuff. I just took some unwanted clothes from my teenage daughter on the SECOND day of their sale and my daughter still made $36.

Borrowing against a whole life policy is not strictly "borrowing from yourself and paying yourself back." Setting aside how over-priced such policies are, when one borrows from it, one pays interest to the life insurance company, not one's own cash value. Second, if you die while that money is lent, they deduct the difference from your death benefit. If you're looking for extra cash and have whole life, a much better move would be to get a term life insurance policy in place and then cash out the whole life policy. Thanks for your thoughts damtoothysam. I think how bad it is depends a lot on who you are and where you live right now. If you just lost your job, are supporting kids, and are looking at foreclosure because of it, saving money by avoiding Starbucks is not gonna really rev yer engine, know what I mean? But I do take your point. :)

Some good idea there on making some quick money. There is one place I would disagree with in your hub. You said "We're Doomed". Well my friend that is definitely true if you think it and even more so true if you say it.

What we project out is exactly what we will get back. We will all stop being doomed the moment we stop thinking we are.

I suggest reading the book "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill if you have not already to understand this philosophy that resulted in the creation of multiple millionaires, many of which who gained their wealth during the Great Depression.

Mindset is 90 percent of the battle in times like these. There is plenty of money to be made for those who are resourceful.

Change your mind, change your life. Change your income. It really is that simple.

Have a fantastic Day!

Great hub! I've been looking for ways to make money this summer since the job market doesn't favor students with no prior work experience.

I like the idea of selling my plasma since I haven't quite figured out to make money freelance writing yet.

Thanks.

Lots of great advice. I had a garage sale just last weekend. Didn't make a fortune, but made enough to put gas in the car for a couple of weeks. Thanks for the informative hub.

Wow- pgrundy, this hub really hit the spot. At this point in our lives, we really need to read something like this---the way it was written was very organized- depending on the reader whose style in understanding and learning differ- the enumeration..really saves time and effort to scan or skim while reading what works best for the reader...Keep it up--you are my idol...I'll be reading more of your stuff, so I;ll see you in the next forum or fan mail, or any widget......

Making Bank at a Change Machine

What you need:

- one $5 bill

- one $1 bill

-

transparent (scotch) tape

Here’s What to Do:

- Tape the $1 and $5 bills

together, end to end, reversed, so that the $5 is

facing into the machine properly, but the $1

is backwards.

- Tape the bills end to end, without them overlapping. You essentially

want

to have one long bill

- Deposit your "bill" into a change machine

and walk away w/ $5 in quarters,

as well as your original bills.

How This

Actually Works:

The machine accepts your $5 bill, giving you change. It then attempts

to

confiscate your $1 bill, only to find it is backwards. Because it is

incorrectly

placed in the machine, it spits the bill back out, with your $5

attached. At the worst, the

two bills will separate, and you will lose

the $5 bill, but you will have $5 in quarters, so

you will break even.

Note: Some newer machines have alarms on them that can notice the

original

bill is not deposited. This is illegal in every state, and most countries

too!

Nice and interesting Hub.

While we people are into blogging why not maximize it by joining free "paid to click and paid advertising"

One tried and tested web site is Clix Sense.

Simply register to this site http://www.clixsense.com/?2909686 and find out for yourself how easy it is.

You see I can click a hundred ads in one sitting while I'm at my regular paying work. And if I have time when I'm home, I could make more clicks in a day!!!

Enjoy and reap your check in matter of weeks.

Happy hubbing everyone!!! (^;^)

Great articles here! And I hope this gpt site will helps.

Most of the GPT sites that I came across are fake. Some are scam. Yet some are real though. I have been paid from a gpt site that I just joined three months ago for two times now. Now I'm still waiting for my second check.

Here is the picture of my first check - http://www.flickr.com/photos/41495686@N08/38464753

I get paid for $58.82 for the first check. My second check is arriving in about six days. So I'll post a picture here again when I get it.

For more information, you can take a lookt at http://tricks-about-cashcrate.blogspot.com or contact me. =)

Great article pgundy. Tried the garage sale. No one wanted my junk. Haven't tried out some of the others and like you, I seem to have misplaced all my gold, don't have anything worth pawning, so I guess that leaves weeding and laundry. Nah! -- I'd rather go hungry. Any other ideas that don't involve bleeding?

pgrundy profile image

pgrundy  says:

Hi Immartin--I think that, bottom line, most of us are looking at a lower standard of living over the long haul. That's OK with me, but the politics of it does bother me. I make an OK halftime income writing freelance articles here and for other people. Check out Examiner.com. You have to write about U.S. regional topics, but if they hire you the ad revenue is not too terrible (so far). I write paranormal stuff for West Michigan. If you decide to apply and you mention I referred you I'll get $50 if they take you on--plus, anyone you refer that they hire you get $50 too.

It's OK, not great, but doable. They want short pieces so it doesn't take lots of time. Good luck. I think we are all scrabbling these days. :)

Some people volunteer for drug experiments and are paid quite well testing new drugs. Hmmm.

pgrundy profile image

pgrundy  says:

bgamall---Hi! I live in a town where lots of drug companies and research labs are located, and it coincidentally is also a college town. I see their ads in the papers all the time. Some of these studies pay really big bucks, but you never know if you'll be getting the sugar pill version or the live drug, and they mostly want young healthy people or people with serious illnesses. What is disturbing is, people with serious illnesses sign up hoping to get some treatment benefit, even though they tell them straight out they might get a placebo and there are no guarantees. Kind of creepy, I think.
